...costs the artists themselves had to be paid. David Bowie, for instance, he played three songs and was paid just £50!
John Lennon was one who refused to accept his fee, insisting that he should be rewarded with chocolate Bath Oliver biscuits instead!
The opening title sequence featured an animated man kicking at a star. He was to become affectionately known as The Starkicker of course.
The makers of the programme continually broke new ground. Their 'simulcast' of radio and television was the first ever. The first live transatlantic broadcast of a rock concert as well as the television coverage of the Live Aid concert, were all achieved by the Old Grey Whistle Test team. Other first included the first British TV performance of a certain Mr BobMarley and the Wailers.
The programme is alas no more, having ended it's sixteen year run in 1987...

Advantages: A good retropective of 70's music Disadvantages: Only an appetiser as to what could become an extended series
...I dived into the store when this DVD was first released, and although somewhat disappointed in the lack of more of the highlights from this very influential TV programme.
I remember having a load of VHS copies of these programmes from the 70's, and looked forward to remembering some of my favourites.
Nevertheless, this collection is one for the music collector and showed some very unique early footage of many now famous bands.
Bob Harris's sexy drones add that extra touch of flavour to these highlights, which include the first time BobMarley was seen on TV, through to the Alex Harvey Band almost blowing Bob off his chair.
Then we saw Little Feat in all their glory through to the legendary OGWT live concerts featuring the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Good stuff, but here's hoping that the Beeb will bring out more from this excellent...
