Boat Trip is a fairly reasonable comedy. I was expecting something a bit like American Pie, but I find this was more like a sort of grown up carry on film.
It starts with Jerry a sort of nice guy romantic (played by Cuba Gooding Jnr). He decides to propose to his long-term girlfriend in a hot air balloon. An odd decision as he suffers from motion sick. It ends in disaster, as he is sick over her. She declines and reveals she is having an affair with a mechanic.
Poor old Jerry is distraught and his friend Nick (Horatio Sanz) decides to help him out. Nick is the sort of a role John Candy would have played; an annoying, overweight fellow who isn’t at all malicious but still may well be best avoided. Nick had meet a friend at a party who had got himself a gorgeous girlfriend; apparently they meet on a cruise. So Nick persuades Jerry they need to go on a cruise to get some women. Unfortunately Nick upsets the travel agent and the end up being booked on a gay cruise instead.
Once they are onboard they cannot get off, although they both want to. An older homosexual takes a fancy to Nick, in fact it is none other than Roger Moore. Roger Moore is very amusing. They are suddenly terrified that they are going to be a target for every gay male on the ship.
Jerry ends up falling for the female dance instructor. Meanwhile Nick has a stroke of luck when the cruise ship rescues the Swedish Female Sun Tanning team. He offers him services as an applicator of sun cream. One of the members of the team takes a fancy to him and makes him an offer he can’t refuse, but he ends up in bed with the older team coach by mistake. At one stage Nick also wonders if he might actually be gay…
There is quite a lot of adult and sexual humour in this film, and it is certainly not suitable for children! The film does somewhat stereotype gay men, but then it is in a way that no one should take seriously. The gay men are certainly not overly predatory, and it could be argued that the Swedish are equally stereotyped.
The characters in the films are mostly stereotypes. To be honest I found the female dance instructor to be good looking, but she was as superficial as Jerry girlfriend at the start of the film. She seems to be quite cold and does little more than lick a bananna entisingly(a rather OTT scene). The most likeable characters is Nick, who learns to be less superficial. None of the actors really stand out, but most performances are ok.
This film is a comedy and it is funny in places. It is not completely unamusing, but it is not really a “laugh a minute” either. I would not have been happy to watch it in the cinema, but it is a reasonable DVD rental. It is probably aimed at the opened minded.
