We travelled into Cambridge – a journey of approximately 18 miles to do some shopping and watch a movie called ‘Monsters ball’. We did our shopping and duly went to the ticket office at the cinema where I announced I’d like to tickets to see “Monsters ball”. “You can’t” he replied, “The film hasn’t arrived!” “ And besides” he continued “it was only showing today as a preview!” Typical I thought, scanning the film board to see what else to watch. My eyes fell upon a film, which I had seen advertised – Boat trip. I bought my tickets, and off we went to watch the film.
~~A little of the plot: ~~
The main characters are Nick (Horatio Sanz): Nick is an overweight guy, who is trying to help his friend over a broken relationship. His friend (the other main character) is Jerry: Cuba Gooding plays Jerry. Jerry was in a hot air balloon proposing
to his girlfriend, when he vomited all over her dress. Needless to say this improve her chances of saying yes, and indeed she declines and declares her love for another.
Nick trying to help his friend through this traumatic time decides (upon advice from an elderly man with a young wife) that a cruise is what they need. The ratio of men to women it is claimed is something like 3 to 1.
However in the travel agents things take a turn and as revenge they get booked onto a gay cruise – without their knowledge.
I imagined the film to be like American pie, but apart from the laughs it hasn’t got any similarities.
They board the ship and it gets underway sailing its way around the ocean. It isn’t long before the pair realise what type of ship they are on, and want to get off. Nick in a panic get the flare gun off the deck and shoots it as he sees a helicopter in the skies above. A minute late a huge splash makes it clear the flare hit the helicopter and caused it to crash.
Roger Moore plays Lloyd a mature man lover, who takes a shine to Nick. Nick begins to realise that he’s prejudice against gay men is non-founded and starts to think he is inclined that way too, until a dozen Swedish girls appear on the ship, apparently their helicopter had been hit by a flare!
Jerry in the meantime is falling in love with the only resident female on the ship – Gabriella (Roselyn Sanchez), a beautiful dance instructor who has already saved his life. As the ship goes on they become closer, until Jerry’s first girlfriend (Remember the one with the puke over her) appears on the boat to make it up with Jerry. It’s by sheer coincidence that Gabriella informs her that it is a gay cruise.
Eventually reconciled Jerry finds he’s way to the altar with his girlfriend. But will he go through with it? Will it be stopped?
~~My thoughts~~~
The film has a lot of innuendo of the adult nature, and do we really want to see huge ice penises shooting water? Another scene sees Gabriella asking Jerry (whom she believes to be gay) to show her how to do a good blowjob. The film was okay, nothing special though. It didn’t have me in fits of laughter throughout the film, though there were several moments of humour in the film.
The stereotyping of a gay male is a little off-putting. This film has them all as village people – with their backsides showing through cut out’s in the trousers: Or Larry Grayson’s.
The film is worth a view simply for the laughs that are included within it, not to mention the twelve Swedish beauties. Ingrid one of the Swedish tanning group is desperate for a man, but it’s her coach who ends up with the pleasure after Ingrid arranging a meet up.
The performances were average, no Oscar winning performances here! The cast do there bit okay, and Roger Moore is quite unbelievable as queen Lloyd, the plot is fairly weak and quite predictable – just what you would expect from this type of film.
Overall:
Depending on your humour and acceptable boundaries, you might enjoy this film. There are some quite funny scenes, so at least one laugh is almost guaranteed.
Overall I give this film 5/10
The film is a certificate 15 and runs for about two hours.
Thanks for reading - Dave
