My brother came to see me recently and with him he had a bunch of films for me to watch (bless him). He knows I love teen movies (I’m the teen movie queen don’t you know!?) with a passion so in the pile was “Blue Crush”. Oh no, not the movie with that Bosworth chick, the one who’s going out with…sob Orlando Bloom! Well yes that’s the one. Day after day it was just sat on my DVD player, finally I decided I might as well watch it, it’s not like she’s gonna be snogging Orli in the movie or anything!
Anne Marie Chadwick lives in Hawaii with her two best friends Lena and Eden, and her rebellious little sister Penny. Anne Marie is a hardcore surfer chick who, after an accident is left with little confidence. Anne Marie has to prepare for a major competition approaching; she needs to practice, practice, practice but what one thing can be the biggest distraction to a cute little blonde chick in a bikini? You got it, a beautiful man! That’s where the gorgeous Matt comes in, he’s not as much a distraction, but Eden thinks Anne Marie is wasting valuable preparation time with this guy.
After reading that, I guess you could say this movie lacks a story. It’s a very thin plot, and just such a basic story; you can’t help but feel a little disappointed. A girl has to prepare for a competition, then comes along handsome guy, it sounds so familiar doesn’t it? But I was probably expecting too much, it is JUST a teen movie after all, isn’t it? Well actually no, I mean in the sense that it’s not a run of the mill teen movie. Normal teen movies have comedy to make up for the lack of a decent plot, however in blue crush’s case, there isn’t really much comedy, it’s a serious teen movie don’t you know? What I personally don’t understand is why the movie is so serious, come on, we have three gorgeous girls hanging around in scantily clad bikinis, nothing serious about that. . A tad hypocritical? Also this movie seems to be rather cliché ridden, it’s not a shock as most teen movies are, but if this film was really to live up to its teen movie with a different status, then the clichés should have been toned down, a lot. Also what’s with the subplots which go absolutely nowhere? There’s this semi interesting sub plot about Anne Marie’s sister Penny being a bit of a rebel, but that goes nowhere, then there’s Anne Marie’s mother who left them, which again goes nowhere. Unnecessary space fillers? I think so.
Another disappointment is that this film has no nail-biting climax. It’s so predictable, and not even in a good teen movie way. After watching the movie for half an hour is so simple to guess what’s going to happen. The script was also lacking in my opinion. Admittedly people don’t go into a movie with teen stars leading the cast, expecting Oscar worthy performances or a brilliant script, so in this instance I guess the predictability of this movie is no real big deal. Halfway through the film I couldn’t help but phone my friend Kimberly and tell her how much she looked like Sanoe Lake, a sign this movie hadn’t really grabbed my attention, rather than thinking about the story I just kept thinking, wow, Lena looks like Kim…that can’t be a good thing right? I guess that’s the biggest problem this movie has, it has a tendency to go all slow on you without warning, it just seems to have a dull, monotonous tone.
Kate Bosworth in my opinion gave a decent performance, although at times I felt she just seemed so emotionless, but maybe that was the character, who knows, I’ll watch “Wonderland” and decide if Miss Bosworth deserves the leading lady status. In a way I felt the role was a bit wasted, Michelle Rodriguez gave a much better performance than Bosworth did, and she was only the supporting actress. Maybe it was too early for her to be the main character even if it’s just a teen movie. The only cool thing about Kate Bosworth is her eyes! One green and one blue, which has absolutely nothing to do with the movie…! Although I felt Bosworth disappointed in this movie, I still think she has talent, but needs to know where she’s going, teen movie bimbo or serious Hollywood starlet? Good performances also came from Matthew Davis, Mika Boorem and Sanoe Lake, however I think the best performance came from Michelle Rodriguez, she played Eden as a bit of a tough coach to Anne Marie but she played the part really well, unlike emotionless Bosworth.
This movie is directed by John Stockwell who also directed one of my favourite movies “Crazy/Beautiful”. Direction wise I can see this guy isn’t very versatile, this film shares a very similar tone to that of “Crazy/Beautiful”. It works for C/B however it doesn’t work for “Blue crush”. This film in my opinion should have been a bit more upbeat and fun, rather than so serious. Stockwell possibly wanted this to be no ordinary teen movie, but having done that, he’s probably alienated his target market, and bored others.
Something worth mentioning is the great camera work; the way the big, beautiful waves are filmed is just amazing. It genuinely makes you want to get out a surfboard and hit the waves! Some of the best scenes are of the girls hitting the waves. David Hennings the cinematographer seems to get right in there, making it seem as though you are in the water yourself, that is what I call good cinematography, when you yourself feel as if you’re surfing right there with them. The dazzling cinematography was definitely a highpoint of this movie. They might have skimmed on the plot, but at least they didn’t with the impressive camera work.
If you’re into surfing then you’ll probably enjoy some of the great surfing sequences, or in my case staring longingly at the beautiful crystal beaches. I felt the energetic surfing scenes were impressive however CGI is certainly not that impressive in this film, as you can blatantly see Bosworth’s face has just been CGI’d onto some professional surfers face. Not a good move, however if you still like surfing then you’ll probably enjoy those scenes. But if you think just because you’re a surfer you’ll enjoy this then you’re sadly mistaken, as love happens to ruin everything surfing related, which might annoy the surfer fans among us.
I have to mention the brilliant soundtrack, which is probably the best thing about this movie. One of my most favourite songs ever “Destiny” by Zero 7 is on the soundtrack, and also appears in the movie, in one of the best scenes in my opinion, only because the music and the actual scene fit together so perfectly. Other great songs that can be found are “Cruel summer remix” by Bananarama, which is a summer anthem in my opinion! The doves “Firesuite” is also on the soundtrack as well as Lenny Kravitz’ “If I could fall in love”, N.E.R.D’s “Rock star”, Beenie man’s “party hard” and many more, it’s definitely a soundtrack worth picking up.
Overall this movie is nothing special, slow at times, and in all honesty, quite pointless but that’s the fun of it, as serious as it might try to be, this is just another teen movie. A movie for people who prefer teen drama movies, although it really isn’t that serious, it just lacks the fun most teen movies have. This movie is more than just girls in bikinis, but not much more. This movie isn’t terrible; it’s just extremely mediocre. I would recommend this to teenage girls who like to watch young heroines pulling through troubled times. However I wouldn’t recommend this to people who get bored easily, as this film does tend to drag on. I would probably watch this film again if I had nothing else to do, but it’s not something I will remember for a long time to come.

Advantages: great camerawork, puts you in a summery mood Disadvantages: as always with teen flicks, a lacking storyline
...sure what to expect with Blue Crush. Most reviews said the same - girls in bikinis = good, plot = crap. I have to agree, but if you watch teen movies for clever storylines you really need your head checking.
The basic story is this - our heroine Anne Marie (played by Kate Bosworth, who was in the Dawson's Creek spin-off 'Young Americans') is a surfer chick from Maui who lives with her friends ('The Fast & The Furious's Michelle Rodriguez and real-life ... ...cinematography and camera work - blue crush uses a new filming technique to take the audience right inside the wave during the surfing scenes (which fill about 30% of the film, interspersed with family arguments, washboard stomachs, boobs in tiny bikinis and some tame romance). Blue crush was released in the UK in March/April time as it dawned on British Summer. It was released in the USA in the summer of 2002, but after a successful debut, was not released here, as winter was drawing in and it seemed an inappropriate time to debut a summer surfing film.
The film makers itself originally wanted surfers to audition, and teach them how to act. However this did not stop many actors who couldn't surf, trying to audition and ... ...had surfing stunt doubles.
New actress Kate Bosworth held the starring role as Ann-marie, an aspiring surfer from a young age, now in her early 20's, living in surfing capital, Hawaii. She lives with her younger sister and 2 friends in an apartment/beach house on the edge of the beach and works cleaning hotel rooms, in order to give herself time to practise surfing. The practise is needed as she wants to compete 'at pipe' ie. The pipeline masters, ...

DVD Description
Set among the white beaches and thunderous waves of Hawaii's North Shore, BLUE CRUSH is an adrenaline-drenched surf picture that boasts a star-making performance from Kate Bosworth. Bosworth is Anne Marie, a determined surfer who shares a beachside shack with her best friends Eden (Michelle Rodriguez) and Lena (Sanoe Lake), and younger sister Penny (Mika Boorem). Just days away from the infamous Rip Masters surfing contest, Anne Marie's life is thrown into turmoil. After being fired from her housekeeping job at a luxury resort hotel, she is courted by the hunky NFL quarterback Matt Tollman (Matthew Davis). As she tries to contain the wild emotions that are threatening to overwhelm her, Anne Marie tries to come to terms with a surfing accident from her past that nearly killed her. In order to survive the contest's deadly, crushing waves, Anne Marie must reach deep within herself to find the courage necessary to come out on top. With BLUE CRUSH, director John Stockwell gives the audience what they want: bikinis, music, romance, and surfing. His picture is graced with David Hennings' gorgeous photography, which captures the beauty and the excitement of the immensely popular sport.
