This film is based on events in the life of Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), an American who sought to become the champion of a secret, dangerous martial arts contest called...
more...Kumite. While Dux searches through the streets of Hong Kong for the underground arena where the event is being held, he must outfox U.S. agents who want him to work for the government instead of entering the competition. The exciting climax of the film is the Kumite itself, when Dux faces the imposing, undefeated Chong Li--who's not above cheating....

I'm a fan of Jean Claude Van Damme and this is probably one of his best ever movies made. Van Damme is pretty okay as Frank Dux, although he suffers a bit through his stale acting at times. Martial arts sequences are all very well chereographed, which isn't a surprise as Frank Dux himself helped with them. Nice opening sequence and introduction to the character of Bolo Young. Movie could do without the character of Janice Kent, who looks like she is only in there to show off Van Dammes body and the 'coin' trick. Good usage of real martial artists in fight sequences. Could do without the mushy bit with Ray Jackson near the end in hospital. Overall a good first JVCD movie and a must-have for martial arts fans.
