There's only one reason why I haven't given this film the maximum score. The animation is stunning, the atmosphere created is superb, and, although the storyline isn't the best I've ever seen, it's still engrossing and held my attention right until the end of the film. However, the film is extremely short - at only 45 minutes including credits it's barely half the length of most films. As a result it feels like the first couple of episodes of a longer series, leaving you hungry for more as the final credits roll. More character development would have strengthened the film, as well some more background to the story.
Blood: The Last Vampire is an anime film - a Japanese-style of cartoon. Don't let that fool you into thinking it's aimed at children though; there are anime films of all genres and aimed at all ages. This film has a 15 certificate, which in my opinion is about right - it's a horror film with a fair amount of blood, and so is not suitable for small children.
The key character in the film is Saya, a mysterious young woman who hunts down blood-drinking demons who can disguise themselves as normal humans. Seia is guided by American military officers to a school attached to an American military base in Japan, where two of the monsters are hiding out, and she confronts them during the school's Halloween party.
One of my favourite aspects of the film is the way the language changes depending on the situation; as most of the children in the school are American they talk English to each other, but when only Japanese speakers are around they switch into that language. This happens completely smoothly, and works perfectly. The only minor problem with this is that there is no option to only subtitle half of the film - if you want English subtitles, the English dialogue is also subbed.
The animation is excellent, even for such a modern film (it was made in 2000), far surpassing American style cartoons and even more modern anime films and series. 3D computer graphics are combined with more traditional techniques works a lot better than you would think, and the atmosphere created is as close to perfect as anything I've seen. The quality of the animation is the film's strongest point, and I suspect that it was the cost of this that shortened the film to its current length.
In addition to the film itself, the DVD also has a "making of" documentary, and various trailers for other releases by Manga Entertainment. The language changes between English and Japanese throughout the films, with subtitles available in a range of languages. It can be bought at most major sellers of DVD's, such as HMV and MVC, as well as at more specialist anime and manga stores. The usual cost of £15 is cheaper than a standard DVD, but it is still expensive considering that the film is so short.

A pretty good film, but I didn't think the plot was developed anywhere near enough... :) tom

I like a good Vampy movie but it has to be modern, I was never a huge Vamp fan when I was a teenager. Have you ever seen 'Interview with the Vampire'? excellent film. Can't say I have seen this one but I will check it out on my next visit to the film store. Thanks, SC.

Advantages: 2 good and 2 great episodes, excellent visuals, extensive selection of DVD extras, decent English-dub Disadvantages: Episodes and extras not quite as strong as in Volumes 2 & 3, a little heavy going for some tastes
