Blind Justice is a 1994 HBO made movie. It is a Western movie, set shortly after the American Civil War. It is a film that moves along the same parallels as Bind Fury with Rutger Hauer, and Zatoichi with Beat Takeshi. This is because both these films have stories about central characters that are blind, but instead of being encumbered by this loss of a fundamental sense, on the contrary they are deadly. All these films draw on the irony that they are perceived as vulnerable, a trait that these characters play on to lull others into a vulnerable position themselves. So Blind Justice is a film starring the bright actor Armand Assante. Assante plays Canaan, a blind gunfighter. During the American Civil War Canaan served as a Union soldier who gets wounded in a battle and is left unconscious. During the clean up of the corpse strewn battlefield Canaan is assumed to be dead and slung in a pit with dozens of other bodies. They then proceed to shovel heaps of lime onto the bodies prior to filling in the pit with soil. Canaan wakes up just to get the lime in his eyes, blinding him. His cries are heard and he is rescued from the pit. The story starts a few years later with Canaan roving the land with a baby he promised to protect and get to its mother. Later in the film it does elaborate as to the reason Canaan came to be nursemaid to this wee un'. Upon his travels Canaan happens across a town in the grip of fear. The town is being laid siege too by a reasonably sized gang of Mexican bandits led by Alacran {played by Robert Davi}. This is because a small contingent of federal cavalry are hiding out in the local church protecting a wagon full of silver. The soldiers are amazed to know how a blind man with a baby got into the town past the bandits, but the three dead corpses on the outskirts of town enlightens them. During his time in the town Canaan befriends Caroline played by Elizabeth Shue, and an interesting relationship develops there. Eventually the desperate soldiers seek the help of Canaan, after some displays of his talent for killing bandits, and Canaan agrees, for the right price!
My humble opinion ллллллллллллллл
The film leads to some excellent gunfights, real decent special effects with incredible explosions. I kid you not! When they blow up the church the explosion is amazing. In the town is an very eccentric old native American who helps Canaan. This old Indian is absolutely stark raving insane, but the beauty is that he is extremely funny with it. The relationship between the Indian and Canaan is very humorous to watch. The film is full of wit, decent script, fantastic action sequences that are fantastically choreographed, brilliant acting and much more besides. Alacran is a great leader of bandits with all the right ingredients of cruelty, treachery, greed and ego. If you are sceptic of how convincing the film can be, when portraying a blind man that is so talented with guns, believe me this film really does pull it off. There are many interesting relationship developments in the film Canaan with Caroline, the old Indian, Alacran, and the stupid officer leading the remainder of the troops {Adam Baldwin}, as well as the tenderness Canaan shows to the baby. The film can also boast the fact of its uniqueness within the western genre. The fact that this film is a great unknown to the majority of the populous, it is kind of disappointing since the film is by far one of the greatest western films on celluloid. The acting is very strong and the costumes are very authentic. A very fine addition to anyone's western collection.
