With every film we watch, we always cast our opinions not just on the story, but also the performance given by the actors and actresses. With this in mind, i feel that "Blind Fury" is one of those exceptions that is hard to criticise, as I'm sure you all know, playing the role of a blind man has to be one of the hardest. Especially if the acting is to be convincing.
If you've never seen the film, and you like martial arts action combined with humour, seriousness and outstanding action/acting throughout, this is a must see film. The storyline also is amongst the best around, and considering the film is now some 12 to 13 years old, without losing any of it's viewing capacity, it speaks for itself.
The story begins in Vietnam with "Rutger Hauer" playing the role of Nick Parker, coated in blood, and blinded from a recent battle struggling to find his buddy Frank. Without any success Nick stumbles into a trap and ends up in with a bunch of villagers who help him recover from his wounds. Unfortunately he remains blind and becomes the entertainment for the people who saved his life, though later he is taught self defence by the same villagers.
As the scenes change, we see Nick with hair down to his waste revealing the length of time he has been at the village, and along with that we get a small taste of the progression he has made, particularly with the sword. Although he's blind, you could never class him as handicapped.
A scene jump or two later we find Nick in back civilisation, again searching for his old friend Frank. Eventually after a few very amusing excerpts, he tracks Frank down in Nevada. He arrives at Franks home to be confronted by gang members posing as the police, who are trying to kidnap Franks son Billy, who is played by a very young Brandon Call, whom you may remember from the early days of baywatch as Hoby, Mitch's son. Anyway Billy's mum is shot dead and Nick quickly defeats the aggressors and escapes with Billy.
A little later Nick has to explain to Billy that his mum is dead, which once the tears are over with, allows the full story to come to light. The reason for the attempted kidnap was down to Frank getting heavily involved with the mob, and by doing so amassing a large debt to them. Obviously they wanted their money, hence the remainder of the film revolves around various chases with Nick now having to take on the role of parent along with trying to help his old pal.
As with most of my video op's, I don't want to give too much away and spoil your viewing, so what i will tell you is that through an array of fight scenes and comedy, good old Nick slashes his way to victory with his trusty blind mans cane, which is really a quality precision sword, and even has an attempt at driving which is really funny as you can imagine.
The finale comes along with McCreedy, the mob's head honcho holding frank captive, forcing him to produce drugs with the threat of killing Billy if doesn't comply, but Nick has other idea's and sets about rescuing Frank.
Getting into McCreedy's casino was as easy as walking through the door. Once he's in, he rapidly causes mayhem, and with the cover produced by his antics, finds his way to where Frank is being held, all with the same enthusiasm and humour. They destroy the drugs and set off to what they think is freedom, only to find that McCreedy has got hold of Billy forcing one final showdown.
A few shoot outs later Nick and Frank confront McCreedy, who has arranged a little fight of his own. He's hired a Japanese assassin play by the infamous Sho Kusugi. A fantastic spectacle of sword play follows in which Nick eventually wins, then to finish up disposes of the remaining baddies, and saves the day along with Bill.
To score on a one to ten basis, i have to give it 10 out of 10. It's well worth having in your collection.
Advantages: Better quality sound and picture than VHS Disadvantages: Only DD Stereo, No special features
...Rutger Hauer is the blind Vietnam vet with quite impossible prowess with a sword, (kept within his cane). Is handed an equally impossible assignment in escorting a nine-year-old boy to his father. The boy’s also wanted by Nevada gangsters who have just killed his mother and need the boy to force his chemist father (Terrance O’Quinn) into the drugs business.
Director (Phillip Nooyce) keeps the action packed journey as lively as you could wish and ... ...called Lyle and Tector (after the brothers in the Wild Bunch) and the gangsters’ secret weapon at the end turns out to be master screen swordsman Sho Kosugi.
An action packed movie from beginning to end that will have you swinging your fists as well as laughing your head off. Great entertainment!
Studio: Columbia TriStar 2004 Stars: Rutger Hauer (Killer Buzz, Salem's Lot, Nowhere to Run, Flesh & Blood, Blade Runner & 10th Kingdom).

Blind Justice is a 1994 HBO made movie. It is a Western movie, set shortly after the American Civil War. It is a film that moves along the same parallels as Bind Fury with Rutger Hauer, and Zatoichi with Beat Takeshi. This is because both these films have stories about central characters that are blind, but instead of being encumbered by this loss of a fundamental sense, on the contrary they are deadly. All these films draw on the irony that they are perceived as vulnerable, a trait that these characters play on to lull others into a vulnerable position themselves. So Blind Justice is a film starring the bright actor Armand Assante. Assante plays Canaan, a blind gunfighter. During the American Civil War Canaan served as a Union soldier who gets wounded in a battle and is left unconscious. During the clean up ...

Directed by Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, BlindFury, etc), The Bone Collector is a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seats until the final reel, unlike so many films of a similar genre.
Denzil Washington stars as crippled NYPD forensics detective Lincoln Rhyme, now bed bound and linked to the world by a realm of high-tech gadgetry he can operate with use of his one remaining useable finger. Retained by the force as an advisor, Rhyme is called into 'action' after beat cop Amelia Donaghy, played by the stunning Angelina Jolie, discovers a mutilated, and de-boned corpse under some railway sleepers in the city.
Ladies and Gentleman, we have a serial killer, but not your run-of-the-mill psycho, no, this one entraps their unsuspecting victims into a Yellow Cab, taking them on a one-way journey they'll never forget!
