or someone with bad news, which would probably be worse. You hear the answer-machine kick in and feel your heart beat. You listen. And then you hear the voice you least expect - a blast from the past." Blast From The Past is the fifth novel from Ben Elton, the celebrated and controversial comedian/playwright/author whose TV credits include The Young Ones and Blackadder as well as the previous novels Stark and Popcorn. Jack Kent, US Captain stationed at Greenham Common during the early eighties, has a secret and unlikely affair with the Polly Sacred Cycle of the Womb and Moon, a 17-year-old ideological peace protester: the star-crossed lovers made Romeo and Juliet look like an arranged marriage! Pamela Anderson and the Ayatollah Khomeni would have made a more natural-looking couple. Sixteen years later and a four star General, Kent returns to Britain to seek out his only true love. Polly, now a lonely thirtysomething Equal Opportunities employee, is being stalked by the Bug when the phone rings. Set in the staid, politically-correct nineties of New Labour Britain, the story flashes back with comic effect to the early eighties, a time of protest, strikes and Cold War. While hardcore Elton fans might be disappointed with the weak plot and smaller helpings of piercing wit and wacky socio-political observations, Blast from the Past still offers up some laugh-out-loud lines and entertaining reading. --Andrew Crawford

... ...Several years ago, I saw BLAST FROM THE PAST, which again wanted to build up a certain amount of nostalgia for older viewers, and yet make it contemporary enough for the young folks. However, there is one crucial difference between this flick and the other ones I mentioned: this one is set in the present day, and is many ways a flipside of BACK TO THE FUTURE. While this film doesn't exactly involve time travel, it touches upon it with what happens ...

Its a Blast Review ofBlast From The Past (Wide Screen)by
pbyron
Advantages: Excellent plot and acting in a gentle film Disadvantages: Not too many extras on the DVD
Blast from the Past shows how America has ‘progressed’ over the years, from 1962 to present day. It tells the tale of a family, the Webbers, who live in LA in the early 60’s, caught up in the big atomic scare where everyone had a bomb shelter in their back yard and listened overhead for the Russian invasion. The father, Calvin, played eccentrically by Christopher Walken, is nuts about the bomb falling and has built a duplicate of ... ...wrong, he immediately assumes that the worst has happened and an atom bomb has exploded nearby. Fearing for his family’s safety, he rushes them underground and locks the doors, setting the time release to 30 something years in the future.
After the time has elapsed, Walken’s son, Adam (Brendan Fraiser) who was born in the shelter and knows nothing about the outside world, wonders out to find supplies for his family, but instead wonders ...

...and paranoid Calvin thought the blast had happened. Calvin took himself and his pregnant wife Helen into the shelter and locked them in for the next 35 years.
Helen gave birth very shortly after they were locked in and named him Adam. Adam spends the next 35 years learning from his parents, all his education from his father and dancing from his mother.
When the shelter is finally unlocked Calvin goes up and gets quiet the shock of life to discover ... ...up to get supplies but having never seen the outside world he gets lost and befriends Eve to help him sell baseball cards to buy supplies.

Oh boy Review ofBlast From The Past (Wide Screen)by
annette_tr9
Advantages: good film for all of the family Disadvantages: none
...film suitable for all ages, Blast From the Past is a great choice.
The story is about the Webber family. Calvin Webber is a bit eccentric and is having a party one night when there’s a bomb scare heard on the radio. The party is cut short and Cavin takes his wife down to his bomb shelter that he has built. When he hears a bang he assumes that there has been a bomb explosion and locks the shelter doors on a timer for 35 years. What he doesn’t ... ...all of the 1960’s furniture and clothes. Adam looks very out of place until Eve takes him shopping!
Blast From the Past is a great film for all ages, everyone will enjoy it. It has good clean humour and a great storyline. A good family film. ...

Fine Movie Review ofBlast From The Past (Wide Screen)by
darkteckno
Advantages: Entertaining, Enjoyable, Feel Good Film! Disadvantages: Don't expect a classic
...a fully fleshed out story, Blast from the Past is also supposed to be part romantic comedy, as the hunky Adam hooks up with his jaded Eve (Alicia Silverstone) and tries to convince her to marry him and go underground.
The sparks don't fly, though, because Silverstone is saddled with the triple whammy of being miscast, playing an underwritten character, and suffering a very bad hairdo. Fraser, however, carries the film lightly and easily on his broad, ...
