Blade was first released in 1998, directed by Stephen Norrington, and starring Wesley Snipes as a half human half vampire, who's mission is to slay all the bad vampires of the world. When I first saw this film I loved it, I was a big fan of the comic books, and watching a big screen adaptation was just well worth the wait. I thought snipes was a brilliant actor to play blade, having seen his early films i.e. passenger 57, and demolition man, this guy is a awesome martial arts expert and can kick ass. If I was to explain Blade to anyone who hasn't seen it, I would describe it as a more violent, intense and action packed Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Plot:

The film starts off really well; a young man is taken into a secret underground nightclub. At first he thinks everything is cool, then gradually realises this is not the sort of club he wants to be in, as everyone is a vampire. The realisms is shown, when the nightclub sprinklers shoot out blood, which people start licking off each other. With the young mans life in danger, in comes blade, the vampire slayer, or as he is known by vampire the "day walker", and hell brakes loose.
The use of CGI effects and some exceptional martial arts scenes, make the opening fight scene amazing, watching it in the cinema really gives you an intense rush as to how the rest of the film is going to play out. During the scene, badly burns one of the vampires names Quinn, who quickly disappears. Blade tracks him down to a hospital, were a nurse named Karen Jenson is bitten. Blade brings her back to his HQ, a big state of the art warehouse, were he lives; he starts her on some treatment, and wait for her to either turn into a vampire or counter react the bite, this is of course done with the help of Blades sidekick Whistler.

Elsewhere a up an coming vampire by the name of Deacon Frost, is rebelling against the senior vampires, and has a plan to break a secret code, that will make him an immortal vampire, someone even blade will find hard to kill. Will blade be able to stop Deacon and his gang, before all hell breaks loose?

Blade the character and his Background:

The lead character of Blade is played by Snipes, and I have to admit having seen him in this film, I guess it was perfectly made for him. Blade is a day walker, which means he is a half vampire half human. Whilst his mother was pregnant, Frost bit her, turning her into a vampire, and thus making Blade a half vampire. He has the perks of both sides, the super human strength, whilst at the same time the ability to walk out during daylight. Blade is a very lonely character, who has so much anger in him, he doesn't have a true identity, and cant call himself either a human or a vampire, he's an outsider.

Abraham Whistler

Whistler is Blade's right hand man, his mentor and his father of sorts. When blade was young he came across Whistler, who was about to kill him, but changed his mind, trained him to become a slayer, and have had a great relationship ever since. Without Whistler their wouldn't be no Blade, and without Blade their wouldn't be no Whistler.

I loved this film, thought it had everything needed to make a great action film. Although the emphasis was on vampires, it wasn't a all out blood bath movie; it was more of an action film, with some really good choreographed fight scenes, which Snipes is amazing in. What's great about this film is that it actually has a decent plot to work around it, one would at times get the assumption its just about killing vampires, but obviously there is more to it.
There is some brilliant use of CGI in this film throughout the fight scenes, as well as the climax of the film, which again adds more emphasis on the action sequences.
