Like most people these days when I see Hollywood has had to adapt another comic book hero to make a film, I think oh no here we go again. In the past we have had Superman, Batman the Mask, and cringe, The Shadow. It was with a great sense of trepidation I sat down to the New Line Cinema production of Blade.
As every young person knows we all have our passions. At the age of fifteen I was still reading and buying “American comics” This is why I always have a great feeling of dread when the film world endeavours to bring a comic character to life. The first time I came across the character called Blade was in 1973. July 1973 to be precise, it was in a graphic novel called “The Tomb of Dracula “number ten in the series. (Graphic novel by the way is the new name for comics with an adult content such as violence), Like Batman, Blade is a character from the dark side of human nature; the areas of the mind and body that polite society does not talk about never mind acknowledges. He is a man whose very being is tortured by his existence, which is dominated by one purpose.
For those of you out there who do not know the plot of the story, it goes something like this: a pregnant mortal woman is bitten by a vampire on her way to the hospital to have her baby, and at the moment
of birth the umbilical cord is cut before the baby is completely infected. The resulting child a boy grows up as an outcast from society, being neither human nor vampire but a strange hybrid of the two. He grows to manhood exacting revenge on the immortals that slaughtered his mother and left him a life of bloodshed.
He takes the name Blade. His appearance has been completely changed from his look in the comic, to that of long black leather coat, dark sunglasses and body armour; he is armed with a mind-boggling array of hi–tech weapons. These said weapons are used to great effect throughout the film from the laser sharpened samurai sword to the silver hollow point garlic tipped bullets in his guns and the silver throwing blades which are his namesakes.
When I see the cast for the film adaptation of Blade it’s time to disengage brain and let the film wash over me, for we have Wesley Snipes in the title role, ably supported by Kris Kristofferson who plays the character called Whistler, who invents, builds and maintains Blades armoury. As Mr Snipes has built up his reputation on “popcorn” movies (films with very little in the way of complex plot lines and more in the way of action and special effects). Wesley Snipes has found the role he was born to play - for he is Blade just as Sean Connery was James Bond. Blade does not disappoint with it’s thumping sound track and fast editing style, clearly aimed at the youth market, with the viewer having very little time to think about how little content there is. But to sit back and wonder at the fight scenes and Computer Generated Images, such as the destruction of Blade adversaries and city backgrounds.
The Director Stephen Norrington (who cut his directing skills in the music industry) has brought the action from the pages of the comic book to life in a very convincing way. He uses “Time Lapse Photography” to show the protagonists moving at great speed. The opening scene of the film is awash with blood, so from the outset you know what type of genre the film falls into. If you like your action all blood and guts with very little in the way of complex dialogue this will be the film for you. A typical line of dialogue is as follows “I got this sucker running” to which Blade replies “It’s still heavy” Whistler’s answer “but you are sooo big”.
My biggest criticism of this film is that it’s just a martial arts movie in a comic book cover. Of course we cannot forget the ego of the leading man who is also a producer of the film, who gets his sunglassed face in nearly every scene of the movie. You can’t help but feel the man is trying too hard to show the world how fit he is, and how much martial arts he knows.(Wesley Snipes is a black belt in a couple of martial arts) As I write this, the sequel Blade Two (The Blood Hunt), is going to be released around the Spring of this year, obviously with the amount of money the first film made (opening weekend twenty two million dollars alone) the public must have a great appetite for this genre of film, and with the current atmosphere (post September 11th ) the Americans at the moment require their heroes, no matter where to be visible and to be heroic.
The original creator of this character was a writer for Marvel Comics called Marv Wolfman but at the time of the original release of The New Line Cinema production called Blade, the writer and creator of the original story was in the process of taking the studio to court. When I hear this I think another money grabbing American out to get something from a big company. But when I looked further into the case it looks like to me that Wolfman has a case, as the character Blade has appeared in other media without any compensation for his creator. Over the years Wolfman has complained about this but to no avail.
So to receive some kind of income from his idea and creation, as both the main character and his nemesis Deacon Frost were of Wolfman in origin, he has taken the step of legal action. As both of these characters are used in the film the author has every right to be angry about not being paid for his creations
At the time of writing this review I do not know the out come of the court case. I personally hope that the writer wins his claim for thirty five Million dollars. His whole argument appears to be that at the time of writing the original story for the comic he was not working for Marvel, but for a company called Warren Publications. He maintains that there was no written or oral agreement at the time he created Blade that gave ownership to Marvel.
My conclusion about all this is, when the big studios are going about making money they are oblivious to everything but the bottom line. (How much money they are going to make) The general public don’t care about this, they just want bigger and better thrills, and to be entertained for a couple hours in the dark of a cinema, and forget the real world. If you are a fan of this type of film and a lot of people appear to be by the amount of money the first film made, I have only one thing to say, “you pay your money and you make your choice”.
As a foot note you can pick this DVD up at Woolies for £5.99
