I first saw this film a couple of Saturdays ago on the good old beep – BBC2 to be precise – expecting the usual vampire story with a romantic twist thrown in for good measure, or bad, depending how you like your films. Well, stroke me with a feather, not a Snipey kiss in sight ( Snipes/Snipey, lead character – get it? Oh never mind, I give up).

The pic stars Wesley Snipes as Blade, a mutated sort of vampire who has certain advantages over your normal, happy go lucky blood drinkers out there, such as being able to tolerate sunlight and the like. Wesley portrays his character as someone who wouldn’t lose his cool if you stuck a chilli pepper up his ---- (I’ll leave the word open to interpretation – not wanting to offend anyone). The support cast includes well-known Stephen Dorff (I don’t know why the guy doesn’t do more films, such a good actor), and Kris Kristofferson , and the less well-known N’bushe wright as the female goody.

The story, in basic terms, is that Blade was converted to a (semi -) vampire due to his mother being bitten while pregnant with him. Blade is a good vampire of the non-neck sucking variety, he actually fights and kills the baddy blood-thirsty species with various fancy weapons (created for him by Whistler – Kristofferson’s character) and martial art moves and stunts. His adversary is Deacon Frost (Dorff) who wants to convert himself into this supernatural all conquering vampire by utilising Snipes (you’ll have to watch the film to know how and why, ‘cause I ain’t tellin’ ya, it’ll spoil the film for you).

The plot is almost excellent – almost, as one always knows how the ending will be like – but nevertheless there is a difference than to the usual vampire movies, all be it minor. The acting is adequate from a well equipped and more than able cast and Mr Snipes even manages to force a sarcastic smile midway through the film ( I guess that steamin’ hot chilli pepper did get to him in the end ). Special effects are fantastic and not over -done, just right for the movie and placed at the right moments.

BE WARNED – there is a LOT of gory scenes and EVEN MORE bad language and violence. If you are squeamish or easily offended – do not bother watching. There is one scene about 15 minutes into the film where a blood shower in a big basement house is simulated, it was so realistic, it put me off my home-made popcorn. The odd moment of comedy is also on show, including a wholesome second when a character called Pearl passes wind, much to Snipes’ disgust and nasal discomfort.

All in all, a brilliant, enjoyable film, with a story line that makes a refreshing change from the norm that you expect from this genre. Go get it on video. LOL to all.
