There has been vast number of vampire movies in recent years. From the bizarre From Dusk Till Dawn to the visually stunning Bram Stokers Dracula. Then along came Blade. It said that the vampire movie does not have to be outwith the mainstream. With its stunning soundtrack, simplistic but effective story and good actors (only Kris Kristofferson is a great actor in Blade)Blade has taken the genre and shaken it up a bit.
This is a comic book crossover. Normally a phrase that can turn a huge number of people off a movie. Do not let it. This is no Darkman.
The basic story is that there are thousands of vampires in the world. They hold positions of power. Yet some are unhappy at being the underlings to the humans. They seek to overthrow the old regime and take over the world (as you do).
There is however something standing in their way. Blade's mother went into labour just after she was bitten by a vampire. (Now read the next line out loud in your best movie trailer voice) She gave birth to Blade, half vampire, half human, all vampire hunter. He has made it his lifes mission to bring down the vampires along with his old mentor (played by Kris Kristofferson beautifully).
That is the story. Simple.
The great thing about this is not just the story. The thumping soundtrack pumps the audience's adrenilin sky high. The special effects for once are neither naff nor so breath taking they detract from the movie.
The real genius however is the treatment of the genre. It is not treated as a horror movie as most vampire movies seem to be. This is the Terminator 2 of the vampire genre. It has pulled vampire movies kicking and screaming into modern days and has become a mainstream and cult hit at the same time.
I say if you want entertainment and do not mind a bit of (mindless I suppose) violence then Blade is for you. It is no Citizen Kane or Seventh Seal but who the hell wants that on a Saturday night with a few beers?

Just incase you are interested. Wesley Snipes is currently filming Blade 2.
