I was very excited in the build up to this films release. Having seen the previous two i the cinema I was determined to complete the set. I walked in, loved the film and immediately resolved to get the DVD.
The film is excellent and despite changing directors continues the fine tradition of the blade series, casually mixing action, with legend, with dead pan humour.
In this addition blade (wesley snipes) is now being hunted by not only his old enemies the vampires but also the FBI after being set up for murder. Add to this losing his old mentor and friend whistler (Kris Kristofferson in nothing more than a cameo) and the fact that the vampires has resurected the original vampire and father of the them all - Drake (basically Dracula by another name) and it looks bleak for our hero.
However as this is a sequel you know additions will be made to keep the fans interested and in this case it's the 'Nightstalkers'. These are a team of vampire hunters who have operated separately to blade and now come to his rescue.
Leading this young heros is Whistlers illegitimate daughter (has to be illegitimate to avoid continuity error with Whistler's back story) called Abigale and played by Jessica Biel. She is a seriously badass chick and could give Legolas a run for his money with the bow. The other main Nightstalker is Hannibal KIng, who had a short run in the blade comic series. Here he is played with amazing humour and energy by the cast-against-type Ryan Reynolds.
On the side of evil are Drake (Dominic Purcell), Danica Talos (Parker Posey) and a scene stealing Jarko Grimwood (Triple H).
The story revolves around the three main heros trying to kill Drake and stop the vampire take over using a biological weapon designed specifically to target to vampires, the worry is that it may also kill blade.
The special effects and action sequences are excellent and are nicely complemented by the one-liners (usually from a foul mouthed Reynolds) and some great visual humour. There is also a level of emotion with I wasn't expecting from Biel and surrounding a young orphaned girl. The soundtrack is excellent and keeps the tempo of the action well.
Out of the three films I probably like this one second. It's not as dark as the second and I feel Drake is a weak villian, however the supporting cast is better here. I expect this to be the last in the blade series (mainly due to information revealed in the voiceover at the start and end) although due to the performances from Reynolds and Biel I think a 'Nightstalkers' spin off might be a possibility.
DVD: The extras on the DVD are enough to please any fan. They include: Interviews with the stars, blooper reel, alternate ending, some deleted scenes, galleries, trailers. Also a series of mini documentaries into aspects of the film: 'The world of blade', 'story devleopment', 'weapons of blade', 'cast training', 'the music', 'the future of blade' basically any info you would like to kow about the film is covered here and I had almost as much fun with the extras as I did with the film.
I would highly reccommend this DVD in the extended form. The film is excellent on it's own but it's the DVD provides the added level of depth and involvment that most fans want.
