...I fell in love with Blackpool the first time it was broadcast on the BBC. It is just a fabulous, modern musical, sort of in the style of Moulin Rouge (which I did like), because they sing a wide variety of contemporary and classic songs. I will begin my review by saying I am usually an unequivocal hater of most musicals. I am someone who will start to cringe when a nice old movie comes on and just when I am beginning to enjoy it they break into bloody song!
That said, I fell in love with Blackpool the first time it was broadcast on the BBC. It is just a fabulous, modern musical, sort of in the style of Moulin Rouge (which I did like), because they sing a wide variety of contemporary and classic songs. It portrays Blackpool both as the glamorous English seaside Vegas that Ripley fantasizes it to be, and also as a somewhat seedy, rundown resort. It is also a mystery and a romance, with a touch of wry humour thrown in in the form of David Tennant's standout peformance as D.I. Carlisle. For anyone interested in the new Dr. Who's previous roles, this is a prime example of why he was chosen to become the latest timelord. He is perfect in this role, a joy to watch as always.
He (Detective Carlisle) is investigating a murder, focusing on the local big man about town, Ripley Holden, played by the also excellent David Morrissey. The series unfolds with a good deal of suspense and various subplots involving Ripley's children. His wife is played sympathetically by Cutting It's Sarah Parish. A lot of intrigue and romance ensues, along with some heartbreak and past secrets coming out.
Amidst all this are the musical sequences, in which the cast sing along to the backing tracks of the songs they are performing. The dance routines are sly and funny. They build slowly, making them more realistic in a way than most musicals. Yet the fantasy aspect is there too of course, it is difficult to describe really! My particular favorite moment was when they did a Smiths song, The Boy with the Thorn in His Side, as I love the Smiths and never expected to see their music in a musical format! The music sequences can be watched separately if you wish to on the dvd . That unfortunately is the only real extra, shame on the BBC for not making more effort with a unique series which is supposed to have a sequel sometime, and which contains some of the finest acting talent around. Big thumbs up, one of my favorites!
Advantages: Entertaining, Enjoyable, Well Acted, Different, Unique Disadvantages: Only one series!
...drama? If so the BBC Blackpool DVD series is probably the one for you. It is a mystery murder whodunnit starring David Morrisey (now starring in Basic Instinct 2), David Tennant (the new Dr.Who), Sarah Parish (Cutting It), John Thomson (Cold Feet), Shyanne Holden (Coronation Street) and Steve Pemberton (League of Gentleman) among others. The plot revolves around a murder in a new arcade owned by Ripley Holden (David Morrisey) and the invesigation ... ...are a variety of popular song and dance routines which have you watching open mouthed at this unique show. I won't go any further into the plot as I wouldn't want to spoil it for you.
The DVD comes with 2 discs - 3 episodes on each. You can pick up a copy on amazon for about £12 and possibly cheaper on ebay or another auction site.
This is thoroughly reccommended if you missed the show on the BBC last year. The only downside - well it was only ...

Advantages: Thoroughly enjoyable Disadvantages: You might want to watch it all the time
If you didn't see this when it was shown on BBC1 television, then a major treat awaits you in your local DVD store or Internet shopping outlet.
Without giving away too much of the story :-
A young scally (supposedly on his stag weekend) is found dead in a locked amusement arcade.
A young Scottish detective is brought in to investigate.
The series shows the personal and public inter-relationships between the larger than life amusement arcade owner, ... ...There are musical interludes throughout where the cast perform various classic and not so classic pop tunes with dance sequences which go from the sublime to the totally ridiculous and back again.
Lots of twists and turns along the way, with great performances from abroad ranging ensemble of actors cast in a totally inspired fashion.
It is probably best to approach this DVD without too much prior knowledge, but look out for the line where the Elvis ...

an entrepreneur with a love of money and pretty much nothing else, but as the show progresses you find yourself liking him more and more. You like his eccentricities, the dreams, the visions that he never gives up and you find yourself wishing more people were like that. It is very exciting to watch and you cannot help wondering if Ripley's vision will ever turn into a reality.
If you are a fan of the delicious and extraordinary talented (David Tennant) then you will love watching his character Detective Inspector Peter Carlisle. The DVD also includes a special treat of the 2006 one off "Viva Blackpool" As Ripley finds himself under suspicion of murder his public and private life are suddenly under scrutiny. Soon Mr Ripley's secrets are coming back to haunt him and Carlisle uses Natalie to catch Mr Ripley out. Altogether it is an excellent Dvd box ...
Advantages: Interesting, learn more about Blackpool Disadvantages: Amateurish, Weak, Boring
And The Illuminations" I watched it out of curiosity. I know I live in Blackpool, but I wanted to see Blackpool from someone else's eyes so that is why I bought the DVD which has almost four hours of filming from all the attractions that bring people here year after year. If you are thinking of visiting Blackpool or have ever been then you would appreciate "Blackpool And The Illuminations" . I don't think that people who live here would appreciate it that much because it is amateurish and it does get boring at times when you have seen something over and over again.
Put aside all the people that come to Blackpool and get drunk and disorderly, forget all the gimicky "Kiss Me Quick" hats and just remember what you love about Blackpool. Blackpool just isn't about nightclubs and drinking there is a whole lot more to it. Although this DVD might be amateurish it ...
Roy Chubby Brown - Dirty Weekend In Blackpool
This is a DVD that I received for my Christmas; I have also been a huge fan of Chubby and his antics. Given the fact that this review can be read by anyone I will not be using any inappropriate language or reference to his stand up shows.
The main man himself
Chubby - Born "Royston Vasey" on February the 3rd 1945 at Grangetown in Middlesbrough, He left home at the age of 14 years of age, living rough and having many part time jobs, time where difficult for him. Previous jobs even include the royal navy. His first appearance on national television was way back in 1970 when he appeared in a show called New Faces; he came second on that particular episode. Roy then failed his audition on Opportunity knocks when he said the word a**e.
