Blackadder's Christmas Carol is a one-off comedy special, a parody on Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". Timeline wise it's set between the third and the fourth series, and is narrated by Hugh Laurie.
Ebenezer Blackadder owns a shop in Victorian England. In a brilliant twist on Blackadder and on Scrooge, he is widely regarded as the nicest man in England. He will go out of his way for anyone and would give away his last penny if it made someone happy. As a result of this though, he is taken advantage of all time, as people know he never says no to anyone. One person who doesn't though is his assistant, Mr. Baldrick, who for once is actually content in his job. But Ebenezer is lonely and miserable, his shop never makes a profit because he gives it all away and he never keeps anything for himself. That all changes though one Christmas Eve.
The Spirit of Christmas mistakenly bursts in on Ebenezer as he's sleeping and congratulates him on being considerably nicer than his ancestors. With that, he shows him parts of his family's history, scenes from "Blackadder II" and "Blackadder the Third". Instead of liking how better of a person he is than them, he admires them and wants to know what his relatives would be like if he stayed nice. Needless to say, it's not good. But, if he became nasty, his descendants would rule the universe! So, on Christmas Day, he becomes the Blackadder we all know and love: Greedy, mean and selfish. But it comes at a price, because Queen Victoria and Albert come to his house to reward him for his generosity, but he slams the door in their face, not knowing who they were and what they wanted to give him. When, Baldrick shows him the royal seal, he is miffed to say the least.
I think this is probably overlooked as far as Blackadder goes, but it's a worthy addition and deserves to stand up there with the final three seasons! It's different because Blackadder is very nice, and it's very strange to see this. But there are still laughs, even if they aren't the same kinda laughs you expect from a Blackadder show. The writing is very good, and, once Ebenezer becomes mean, the witty put downs are even more delicious as you know these people deserve it because they took advantage of him! This is a great tradition for me, to watch this over the festive period, along with episodes of "Only Fools and Horses" and stuffing my face.
Overall a funny one-off and well worth your time, even if the laughs aren't quite as funny as the actual series'. Five stars.

I always thought this one was a really good alternative version of the original Christmas Carol. For some reason, I've got that opening line in my head now - the "Humbug! Humbug! Humbug, Mr. Baldrick?" one as Blackadder comes into the shop!
Brilliant review.
