tale,Blackadder's Christmas Carolis the most ingenious. Made betweenBlackadder the Third(1987) andBlackadder Goes Forth(1989), the inspired concept is to recast the self-serving Edmund Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson) in Dickens' Scrooge role, but rather than a misanthropic miser make him the most kind-hearted man in England. Tony Robinson's Baldrick is as moronic as ever, while Robbie Coltrane plays the Spirit of Christmas like a forerunner to his Hagrid in theHarry Pottermovies, showing Edmund visions of past and future to not quite the desired effect. Hugh Laurie returns as the Prince Regent fromBlackadder the Thirdand the entire court fromBlackadder II(1986) is reassembled for japes involving a merry seasonal death warrant. Miranda Richardson is outrageously capricious as Elizabeth I, then takes the character a stage further in a decadent space opera future which also sees Patsy (Nursie) Byrne as an android. Though not quite as laugh-out-loud funny as the regularBlackadderseries this is an excellent Yuletide special. On the DVD:Blackadder's Christmas Caroloffers nothing extra on DVD other than the inclusion of optional subtitles. The sound is mono but crystal clear and the 4:3 image is good considering the source material is a TV studio production shot on video. --Gary S Dalkin

Ebenezer Blackadder owns a shop in Victorian England. In a brilliant twist on Blackadder and on Scrooge, he is widely regarded as the nicest man in England. He will go out of his way for anyone and would give away his last penny if it made someone happy. As a result of this though, he is taken advantage of all time, as people know he never says no to anyone. One person who doesn't though is his assistant, Mr. Baldrick, who for once is actually content in his job. But Ebenezer is lonely and miserable, his shop never makes a profit because he gives it all away and he never keeps anything for himself. That all changes though one Christmas Eve.
The Spirit of Christmas mistakenly bursts in on Ebenezer as he's sleeping and congratulates him on being considerably nicer than his ancestors. With that, he shows him parts of his family's history, scenes from "Blackadder II" and "Blackadder the Third". Instead of liking how better of a person he is than them, he admires them and wants to know what his relatives would be like if he stayed nice. Needless to say, it's not good. But, if he became nasty, his descendants would rule the universe! So, on Christmas Day, he becomes the Blackadder we all know and love: Greedy, mean and selfish. But it comes at a price, because Queen Victoria and Albert come to his house to reward him for his generosity, but he slams the door in their face, not knowing who they were and what they wanted to give him. When, Baldrick shows him the royal seal, he is miffed to say the least.
I think this is probably overlooked as far as Blackadder goes, but it's a worthy addition and deserves to stand up there with the final three seasons! It's different because Blackadder is very nice, and it's very strange to see this. But there are still laughs, even if they aren't the same kinda laughs you expect from a Blackadder show. The writing is very good, and, once Ebenezer becomes mean, the witty put downs are even more delicious as you know these people deserve it because they took advantage of him! This is a great tradition for me, to watch this over the festive period, along with episodes of "Only Fools and Horses" and stuffing my face.
Overall a funny one-off and well worth your time, even if the laughs aren't quite as funny as the actual series'. Five stars.
Advantages: Some lovely humour Disadvantages: Not as good as you expect it to be
I watched Blackadder's Christmas Carol a couple of years ago at college and really enjoyed it. So when last weekend I spotted it in Asda for £5 I decided that is was certainly going to become part of my ever-growing DVD collection and popped it in my basket.
Along with my mum, dad and 12 year-old brother I sat down to watch it last night and although it wasn't as funny as I remembered it I still enjoyed it, although my mum did not. Blackadder's ... ...Carol and turns everything on its head. Ebenezer Blackadder is the kindest man in all of England. He owns a moustache shop and along with his worker Baldrick is looking forward to a nice Christmas. He cannot however see anyone else go without and so before Christmas Eve is even over he has already given away his entire years' profit as well as his turkey, his small bowl of nuts and the presents he had bought for himself and Baldrick.
Going to bed ...

Advantages: New(ish) Eddie. Disadvantages: Not great Eddie.
The plot of BCC is simple: the Blackadder family has somehow managed to produce a single Edmund who is neither a snivelling wretch nor a caustic-tongued cad - however, the world treats this particular one as uniformly badly as it has the rest regardless, his endless generosity taken endless advantage of by selfish widows and orphans alike. Much like Ebeneezer Scrooge, however, Blackadder is visited by a ghost: accidentally, as this Blackadder is ... ...Robbie Coltrane) shows him the dark doings of the other Blackadders through history regardless, and our Edmund learns a valuable lesson: bastards have more fun. And so on Christmas morning, he sets out to make everyone else as miserable as they've made him.
Whilst it's certainly fun to catch up with various members of the Blackadder dynasty including one from the distant future, I can't help but get a rather hollow feeling whenever I watch 'Blackadder's ...

Second best sitcom according to viewers of the BBC sereies "Britains Best Sitcom"? Coming second only to Only Fools and Horses? I order a re-count!
I believe Blackadder deserved a lot more as the acting and the events which happen to Edmund Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson - the former Mr Bean) and his servant Baldrick (Tony Robinson - Time Team) are only to be laughed at again and again.
