The complete Blackadder set is basically a must have for comedy fans. It consists of every Blackadder episode from all 4 series, Blackadder's Christmas Carol and also 'Back and Forth'.
These 6 discs are all neatly housed in a compact box set, with hilarious Blackadder quotes and pictures of the characters around the box.
FIRST SERIES.
The first series, entitles 'The Black Adder' is set in medieval England, and portrays the Prince Edmund, Rowan Atkinson, as a less than intelligent slimy man. This is a contrast to the other series where Baldrick is the idiot. I cant really comment too much more series 1 as I'm not a massive fan of it personally. To me it's a bit dated and inferior to the other 3, but still has some funny parts and i do know people who feel that the first series is more enjoyable than the others.
SECOND SERIES
The second series, entitled Blackadder II, is set in Queen Elizabeth's reign, and see a sharp turn in character personality, as Blackadder becomes a newly intelligent and respected man, whereas Baldrick becomes thick as a thick thing. We are also introduced to Queen Elizabeth and Melchett. Two of the funniest characters in all series, brilliantly played by Miranda Richardson and Stephen Fry.
THIRD SERIES
The third series, Blackadder III, is set in late 18th and early 19th century. Blackadder is the servant to Prince George and the series is mostly based in the Prince's palace. Baldrick is Blackadder's servant again and the series contains more of the clever Blackadder/stupid Baldrick banter. Prince George is brilliantly played by Hugh Laurie as a gormless oaf.
FOURTH SERIES
Blackadder Goes Forth, set in WW1, is probably the most famous series of the collection, and in my opinion is the also the funniest. Blackadder's intellect peaks in the series as he tries desperately to escape the trenches. Baldrick also reaches his most stupid, and Tony Robinson excels in the series. Stephen Fry and Tim McInnerny, playing General Melchett and Captain Darling, also bring something special to the mix.
BLACKADDER'S CHRISTMAS CAROL
This is the 5th disc in the set and is a twist on Dickens classic 'A Christmas Carol', in that Blackadder goes from a friendly sharing character to an evil selfish one.
BACK AND FORTH
This is an interesting new episode, set later than the others, and sees Blackadder host a dinner party, at which he reveals he owns a time machine and promises to go into the future and bring his guests any item from the past they want.
Apologies for the rubbish explanation of the plots but i wouldn't want to reveal too much about the episodes and you can only truly appreciate the box set when you get to know the characters for yourself. if you are already a Blackadder fan or looking to get into it for the first time, this box set will deliver.
I bought the box set from www.play.com, priced at £32. I am sure that if you want to shop around you could find it cheaper.
Blackadder is the pinnacle of witty banter and I cannot recommend this box set enough. Well worth the money and with Christmas coming up it would make an ideal present.
Thanks for reading x
