Nick Conklin is a dishonest cop, having had continued pressure put on him by his estranged wife for money; nick has fallen foul of temptation. While attending a hearing for his disciplinary case Nick and his good friend Charlie break for lunch. While enjoying a meal and a quiet chat in their favourite Italian Restaurant they are interrupted by what appears to be a robbery. As the situation unwinds it appears that it's more than just a robbery when two men are left dead. Fully aware that the attack has been carried out by a Japanese mob Nick and Charlie head out onto the streets in pursuit. After a rather prolonged chase they catch up with their man Sato and place him in custody.
It's agreed by the police force that Sato's crimes in his home land of Japan are far worse than in New York and decide to extradite him back to Japan. Both Nick and Charlie are sent along to accompany the transfer. Upon arrival they hand Sato over to the police, only to discover that they were only pretending to be police; the real police arrive obviously to leave empty handed. Due to a technical issue with paperwork as Nick and Charlie never handed Sato over to the actual police they must stay in Japan as overseers until such time as Sato is detained. However they are told that their ranks mean nothing and that they must surrender their weapons.
They are given an aide to help them Masahiro Matsumoto a man for whom honour means everything. The trio engage in a variety of scrapes, but one night they put work behind them and they hit the town. Nick discovers in discussion with Joyce an American living in Osaka that there is a war going on between Sato and his Yakuza soldiers and the Japanese Mafia; this war is brought into the homes of over eleven million Japanese people. While Masahiro and Charlie hit it off in a Karaoke bar, Nick follows up his own leads.
But the night ends in tragedy as Charlie is lured into an enclosed space and executed gangland style while Nick looks on powerless to help him. Masahiro visits Nick at Joyce's apartment containing a box of Charlie's things; he explains that in Japan it's customary to take something to remind you of the person that's just died. As Nick looks through Charlie's things he spies his gun. Looking back at Masahiro he asks if he can take anything.Cast

He shows life on two sides of the ocean, showing how what is regarded as weakness in one country is seen as strength in another. He manages to make the lifestyle enjoyed by the Japanese look so Alien and futuristic; from the flashing lights of trucks; to the backdrops for scenes.
When the movie begins you have no idea that you're on a journey so action packed and compelling. What begins as a simple cop thriller turns into a full scale war on the other side of the world.
The relationships are really focused on Charlie immediately strikes up a warm friendship with Masahiro; but Nick and Masahiro's relationship is much more vicious. When Charlie is slain Nick and Masahiro are bought together to protect Charlie's memory and to get revenge. Masahiro teaches Nick what its like to be honourable and this allows Nick to look back on his life.
Unlike many films of this type there is always something going on; there is never a moment when you're separated from the action and plot of the movie by some tedious bit of nonsence, it's a steady flow for the length of the entire film.
The actors play their parts well Michael Douglas plays washed up Nick very well, you can believe that he is going through a personal decline. Charlie spreads love around him; everybody he meets (with the exception of the bad guys) is touched by his warmth and for the viewer this makes his execution harder to deal with (it needs to be pointed out I have not ruined anything by telling you of Charlie's demise its clearly laid out on the cover). Ken Takakura is fantastic as Masahiro its interesting to see his change of personality as he becomes more like Nick's character; while still having firm believes in honour. Yusaku Matsuda plays Sato terrifyingly well, you have no loyalty to his character and he is instantly dislikeable from the moment he first appears. And finally Mrs Spielberg AKA Kate Capshaw plays a subtle role as a strong romantic lead but without the romance, the tough exterior she first gives off falls away very quickly.
The musical score is a fantastically passionate piece which fits the action on screen perfectly, from the instrumental Black Rain theme written and performed by Hans Zimmer; to Gregg Allman's "I'll be holding on".
In my honest opinion Black Rain is an ideal DVD purchase simply because it's so watchable, each time you view it you'll notice something else; you'll see the creative flair of Ridley Scott in a new way. You also get to look at a different dimension the characters portray from your first viewing too; look below the exterior there is quite a lot to learn.

Black Rain……..Loved The Music……… I must say that although this film was made in 1989 it remains in my top 3 all time movies. If I ever read a tv guide and notice that it’s on I will watch it again. I think in total I have watched it about 11 times and although the first time was the best I still love the film….. It of course has two great actors in Micheal Douglas and Andy Garcia. My wife really has a thing ... ...film up. The music from Black Rain is the most haunting piece of music that I have heard, you can find that track on “Classical Chillout” and I believe it is also the theme music from “Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence”. I will not tell you how the film ends but I will say it’s a great performance from Micheal Douglas, even better than the one on his wedding night!. Andy Garcia is great in the supporting role but you women ...

Made in 1989, ‘Black Rain’ is not just an excellent police and gang war film, but also touches on some difficult questions about the relationship between America and Japan, and deals with the clashes between two very difficult cultures and the role of the code of honour in Japanese society. Advantages: Young Michael Douglas in a period piece Disadvantages: Slow, difficult to uderstand, bad soundtrack
A Ridley Scott action thriller with Micahel Douglas and Andy Garcia in it sounds great! Nice macho picture on the DVD box for the ladies to swoon over and the promise of car chases and fist fights for the boys - oh, wasn't it great in the 80s before the notion of PC correctness crept in?

I was sadly disappointed by this film. I'm a big fan of Lethal Weapon etc, and thought this was going to be a buddy cop movie of the same ilk -perhaps with a bit of Jackie Chan action thrown in for good measure.
I found it was hard to understand the actors, and had a slow plot. Worst of all, I found it was slightly insulting to the Chinese. The lead characters didn't take kindly to a foreign ...

"...BLACK RAIN is exotic, energized entertainment..." (Rolling Stone, p.27, 19/10/1989)
DVD Description
Director Ridley Scott's international crime thriller stars Michael Douglas as Mike Conklin, a New York detective under investigation for corruption. When yakuza hit man Sato (Yusaku Matsuda) kills two American mobsters in New York, he's extradited to Osaka to face trial, with Conklin and Charlie Vincent (Andy Garcia) as his escorts. Mistakenly turning over their prisoner to yakuza disguised as police, Conklin and Vincent realize, after running down some blind alleys, that they have no chance of finding Sato in the unfamiliar city and enlist the services of Japanese desk cop Masahiro "Mas" Masumoto (Ken Takakura). While relaxing with Mas at a karaoke bar, the cops also get information on the world of the yakuza from Joyce Kinglsey (Kate Capshaw), a high-class bargirl. As they continue the search for Sato, the scrupulous, methodical, and civilized style of Japanese police work rubs the improvisational, rule-breaking Americans the wrong way. But when Vincent is murdered, Mas and Conklin realize that success will come only through a blending of investigative and cultural styles. The almost impenetrably sooty, neon-saturated city of Osaka is superbly photographed by future director Jan de Bont.
Strong, inspired acting by main protagonists; intricate, complex story; refreshing edge to the trilogy
Clumsy and cartoonish; pretentious and overly operatic; unsubtle; in the shadow of its predecessors; too self-conscious; underrated and smeared by critics (*)
