It is a shame about the black mask. Let’s pretend that you are that fourteen-year old kid who isn’t likely to enjoy this movie and also lets pretend you’ve seen the latest Zorro movie and you fancy whipping up yourself a Zorro mask but all you have at hand in some cardboard and some sticky back plastic. Jet Li has made it to Hollywood and you might well have seen him in “Lethal Weapon 4” and “Romeo Must Die” but before American and international success came his Asian success. Black Mask is one of those movies that helped push him forwards and to the American film companies attention.
Black Mask will be more than slightly strange if you’ve never seen any of the Hong-Kong style before. Typically, you’ll have the police against the gangs and that formula is followed here. However, there is a super hero aspect here which makes it somewhat unique. I wish I were in a position to tell you that this is the live action version of a popular Manga or Anime, but I’m not. Jet Li’s character was one of a platoon of soldiers who under went genetic transformation to remove their sense of pain - in fact, to remove all feeling at all. Throughout the movie you’ll be reminded that Li wants his feelings back so he can be human again whereas the others believe themselves to be more than human now.
Oh. Hmm. I think it is very likely that if you ever do get to watch this movie you’ll be watching a dubbed copy. That might annoy you if you’re a fourteen-year old kid who’s used to the seamless productions that Hollywood churns out. However, the dubbing worked very well for me - it seemed to fit nicely into a story line where the hero was more than slightly detached from the real world. It gives that outside point of view that relates to the Black Mask.

The movie is a Martial Art marathon. It is a ballet of bullets. I could cliche for Queen and country! Well, maybe, I know I am right about the first two points though. Black Mask is an action packed flick that does not shy away from some rather gory special effects. Acid, for example, is cheap and easy for the special effects department to fake up. When you are dealing with people who are immune to pain you’ll have to be sure to inflict a lot of bloody punishment on their bodies before they can be realistically “put down.”
Not that realism is the main concern of the director though, hmm, in fact, I think it is fair to push the concept of realism out of the window and swap it with Suspension of Disbelief as you would with any super hero movie.
Oh right, oh right. Yes, the martial arts in Black Mast are absolutely breathtaking. What else would you expect from a Jet Li Hong-Kong film? I found the kick fest on top of the pylon particularly spectacular and so were the views from it, even if they were marred by a bit of cheese.
The cheese factor falls and then rises again. That is to say I thought the tank blast dodging at the start was an one-off to get my attention but the super villain at the end of the movie had enough silly special effect weapons to make me chuckle.
You have to watch until the very last scene though. The trick with the camera is the very best thing in the movie.
Advantages: Good Special Effects & Laughs All The Way Disadvantages: Poor Storyline

The black mask, still looks like the man servant from the old green hornet tv series, which was played by Bruce Lee.
Loved the bomb sewn into the chest of the gangster guy "Talk About A Real Heartbreaker" LoL.
This movie is a must though for any martial arts collector, because all in all there is some good fight action.

Jet Li is Tai Feng, a hitman with a habit of intentionally missing his intended victims. When an agent hires him to reap a $100 million rewards for the death of a top Japanese mobster, he finds himself faced with the ?angel of death?, a hitman who punishes the bad. The scene is truly set for an awesome martial arts showdown. This film shows Jet Li at his best with the team that made BlackMask. With its mixture of drama, comedy and style, this is definitely a film to watch over and again. The DVD is packed with anamorphic versions in both English and Cantonese ? with subtitles. As features go, there are interview galleries, biographies, a photo gallery and a music promo. ...

Advantages: Extremely watchable cast, the Smash Mouth song, plenty of extras on the disc Disadvantages: All the elements just don't seem to quite gel
of some wonderful parts amongst ill-conceived ideas than a cohesive, successful whole. This is a genre which can work when all the various ingredients pull everything together (Austin Powers, Men In Black, The Mask) but when that magical formula is not quite all there, you get a film like Mystery Men.
The DVD edition is yet another of those titles which attempts to cover up the failings of the feature itself with a host of tempting goodies on the extras front.
The full-length commentary's main problem is that the director here clearly thinks his film is a lot better than it actually is, rendering a lot of his comments worthless. You cannot intellectualise over a film of this kind.
19 minutes of deleted scenes is a nice bonus, as are the lengthy (but text-only) notes on the origins of the project and the comic from whence ...

in my opinion. Eric Tsang is a comedian in his home country...but it just seems as though his slapstick humour doesn't translate too well.
Normally this would work, as you may have seen in "Lethal Weapon", "Drive" and "Rush Hour", the actors are able to bounce of one another and create a very humourous relationship throughout the movie.....but in this case, Jet Li is just too flat when it comes to acting, he's too serious for his own good.
I'd like to be able to say something nice about the movie, but it's difficult to praise it when its got some really heavy competition......and ultimately it is overshadowed by Jet Li's other films such as "Romeo must Die", "BlackMask" and "Once upon a Time in China"
But as always, Hong Kong Legends don't fail to make a nice DVD presentation, good qaulity picture and sound, and its got a fair ...

DVD Description
Jet Li is the Black Mask. Michael (Li) was an integral part of Project 701, an experimental government program that created superhuman men and women and turned them into indestructible fighting machines. He escapes that dangerous world and instead works as a simple librarian, changing his name to Simon. But soon he is drawn right back in when his former master turns against the government that betrayed Project 701 and demands that Michael rejoin the squad to help carry out his evil plan to take over the Hong Kong drug trade. Directed by Daniel Lee, BLACK MASK is an action-packed comic book brought to life, filled with the requisite explosions, motorcycle stunts, black-and-white flashbacks, laser weaponry, killer CDs, and some major carnage. The terrific martial arts sequences were choreographed by the great Yuen Wo Ping, who was responsible for the fight scenes in THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. Michael's final showdown with his former commander is electrifying--literally. Li's charming good looks and innocent smile lead the way in this exciting tale produced by Tsui Hark.
