If you haven't seen Black Books before, then you should definately get this box set, make sure you have a few hours to spare and stock up on the red wine to join the fun and drinking of Bernand Black (Dylan Moran), Manny (Bill Bailey) and Fran (Tamsin Greig).
These 3 make up the main cast for the show, but throughout all the series there are appearnces from David Walliams, Nick Frost & Simon Pegg just to name a few.
Bernand (Dylan Moran) is a sarcastic, drunk Irishman who seems to have lost all hope for human life. If you have seen Dylan Moran live doing stand-up, it's actually quite similar to Bernard Black.
Bernard owns the book shop, Black Books, which is any wonder is still open as they rarely seem to sell any books. Rudeness and abuse is just some of the things Bernard treats his customers to. During the third series however, you do find a reason for some of Bernards unhapiness.
In the 1st series, Bernard finds a new assistant, Manny (Bill Bailey), who their shop neighbour Fran (Tamsin Grieg) has to fight with Bernanrd for Manny to be hired.
MKanny is, well just Bill Bailey really. A laid back (stoned?) hippy type who likes to see the lighter side of everything. That's probably why Bernard and Manny clash so often, with one trying to lift the mood and the other trying to make everyone else as miserable as he.
Fran, who owns the shop next door, is one of those friends everyone has. the first to a party with more alcohol than needed to fill a football team, but the last standing at the end complaining about the lack of alcohol available.
The show features some incredible antics from the 3 including worm suits, spoons in pianos, a manic trip around the world, the pope being killed and a over officent security door to name a few.
The show tends to follow a similar pattern in most episodes with Bernarnd being drunk and angry with Manny and Fran sitting in the corner giggling - so in some ways, it reminds me of ill spent youth.
The comedy itself is usualy full of cracking one liners and what seems to be well thought out chaos, which is mostly why I liek this. It's almost Fawlty Towers in a book shop.
Since finding black books accidently on channel 4 one night, I have never looked back and can continue to watch this marvellous comedy over and over again.
My only dissapointment is that there seems to be no hope of a 4th series on the horizon.
