Billy Madison is another comedy film starring the as yet unknown at the time Adam Sandler. It was made in 1995 when Sandler was still on Saturday Night Live.
Adam Sandler plays the titular character; he's 27 and the son of Bryan Madison (Darren McGavin), a very rich hotel magnate. So he has never worked a day in his life and doesn't know the true meaning of money as everything is just given to him. But Bryan is retiring, and is torn about whether to give it to Billy or to Eric Gordon (Bradley Whitford), a slimy co-worker at Madison Hotels. So Billy strikes a deal with his dad: he will go through each school grade and pass their exams in a short period of time in order for him to become the head of the company. If he fails, it goes to Gordon.
And if that isn't enough pressure, he gets heckled at school, goofs off as much as he can and tried to woo his third grade teacher, Veronica Vaughn. Will it all pay off?
No offense to Adam Sandler, but this is the kind of role that he plays very well. The immature, silly man-child with a heart of gold, and that description fits Billy Madison perfectly. Just seeing how well he fits in with the kids in his class proves that! The story is hardly original, and you can kind of guess where it's all going to end up, but as they say, it's how you get there that counts, and this is a nice journey.
It's a film you're not supposed to take seriously, you're just supposed to lie back and have some fun watching it. It has the trademark Sandler slapstick humour that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The cast do their job well and give the film an all-around happy tone. There are a lot of comedies out there that try to do slapstick (any of those films with "movie" in the title) but they fail because they just do gags with absolutely nothing behind them. This film gets it right, that you have to have heart and something behind the jokes, that's what makes a good comedy movie.
Overall a nice, heartwarming, funny film that is well worth your time. I would give it three and a half stars if I could, but I can't, so just add another half a star onto the rating!
