Advantages: Another chance to see a wildly successful comedy troupe... Disadvantages: ...and that success might baffle you
...How did Madonna put it in her song 'Erotica'?
'BillOddie, BillOddie, put your hands all over my body...'
Bizarrely, this misheard lyric may constitute the Goodies's most significant contribution to popular culture in the 1990s: an astonishing fall from grace for a comedy combo that were a bedrock of the BBC's light entertainment output in the 1970s. How did this happen? For all the while that Messrs Garden, Oddie and Brooke-Taylor languished as a trace memory for a generation, the BBC were merrily flogging the wares of most of their contemporaries on video, and later on DVD. Contemporaries who weren't conspicuously more talented, and most definitely weren't as successful. What exactly had the Goodies done to deserve such ostracising? Did they kidnap and eat children as they slept? Were they responsible for Idi Amin's regime...

Advantages: Door stop sized Disadvantages: Dissapointing
...This was a great show on TV which each hour long episode followed a different celebrity on a travel back through their families past exploring the past of their grandparents and great grandparents and revealing family secrets which had been forgotten through the ages.
Celebrities featured in the first series include: David Baddiel, Jeremy Clarkson, Leslie Garrett, Ian Hislop, Sue Johnstone, BillOddie, Amanda Redman, Vic Reeves, Meera Syal and Moira Stuart.
I loved the few episodes I managed to catch in this series and was particularly impressed with Jeremy Clarkson, BillOddie and Vic Reeves episodes so thought this an excellant chance to catch up.
BIG MISTAKE
THIS IS NOT EACH AND EPISODE IN FULL BUT RATHER SHORT SNIPPETS FROM THE SERIES.
It is 10 hours of TV reduced to 76 mins - why? It would have been so much better to have...

Advantages: Very funny Disadvantages: A little dated
...English for the deaf and hard of hearing
Duration 4 hours (approx)
One final word about the certification, The Goodies would naturally seem to appeal to all ages even the very youngest but there are very mild references to sex, which often don't get picked up by younger viewers as well as a fair amount of comedy violence, which probably got this collection its PG rating however I would think that in most cases this kind of humour would be suitable for all ages and certainly my kids ranging from 5-12 all love it and it is interesting to see how they react to seeing BillOddie who has now re-invented himself as a naturalist and birdwatcher in his more 'silly' phase.
Quite a lot of extra goodies (pardon the pun) in the dvd's all worth watching and the original scripts are included for the hardcore fans. The 'Gymnasium Sketch' is very funny...
