Nothing is more evident in this DVD than the sheer joy that Bailey feels performing at a venue that has held some of the most iconic music events in history. His inner rock star is visibly bursting out of his face, much like an exited young boy on Christmas morning. As an avid fan of rock music, this gig must surely have been a dream come true for the comedian, and the stops are well and truly pulled out for this show, with no expense spared in creating a medley of multimedia delight for the audience at Wembley.
As usual with Baileys live performances, he intersperses his comedy with musical dittys and comedic songs - some of which will be familiar to fans of some of his previous shows. The thing that really sets this show apart from others by the comedian is the sheer scale of the visual stage effects used; with lighting, video screens, and even motorized scooters incorporated into the performance to help emphasize moments in the show. The atmosphere is most certainly not lost in the DVD version, and the editing helps to recreate the stage effects by using a well edited selection of both close ups and full stage shots to show off the impressive visuals on stage.
The sheer scale of the performance seems to sidetrack Bailey at times, as at some moments he seems to find it difficult to keep to what is clearly a heavily choreographed and rehearsed routine. Obviously, a performance of such magnitude with such technically detailed effects has to be rehearsed to perfection, but I feel that some parts of the show felt a little strained, and the lack of Bills usual hilarious moments of improvisation made this a little slow to watch in places. Many of the jokes are ones that he has re written from previous shows and I found this to be a bit of a shame, it would have been nice to see more new material, but never the less I laughed my socks off the whole way through!
Bill Bailey seems to have injected a lot more of his social and political views into this show, perhaps making the most of an opportunity to speak to such a large audience. His opening piece is a dig at George bush and his so called ' environmental concerns' , and he continues with contemporary subject matter the whole way through the production, including a song which has the whole of Wembley stadium chanting 'hey, ASDA, I aint gonna be your bitch.' - if anything this DVD gives the impression that Bill Bailey feels this is the pinnacle of his career, a dream come true, and for that reason the show is big, bold and a far cry from the normal stand up comedy shows where a microphone and a stool are the only requirements.
Any Bill Bailey fan will love this DVD, and all the old favourites are thrown into the mix, alongside some hilarious new material. Add to that Wembley stadium, stunning visual effects, sharp suits and the whole stadium singing "Ive got Ham but Im not a Hamster" , and you have an hour and a half of laughter! No where else will you see the An incredible east vs west 'duelling banjos' - the best part of the DVD by far, i dont want to ruin it for you so watch it and find out !! :)
