I saw this in Tesco for £2.97 and thought it might pass away an afternoon during the school holidays. I was right.
Tom Hanks was nominated for an Oscar for best actor for his role in this 1998 film. It might have only been made eight years ago, but boy, does Tom Hanks look young!
It's 99 minutes long and PG rated (some scenes unsuitable for small children)
It's the story of a 12 year old boy, Josh Baskin. At a fun fair he is knocked back by a girl (you knew a woman would be the cause of all this) and wishes he was big. Next morning, he wakes up to find he is 30.
His friend, Billy, played by Jared Rushton, takes charge, helps him get to New York (it's obviously close) and find somewhere to stay. Then Josh gets a job at a toy company, and by a series of lucky coincidences, is promoted and ends up testing toys, earning loads, having his own apartment, etc. His success is due to his ability to predict which toys children will love. At this point there's another love interest for him, melting the heart of a hard bitten executive in the company, played by Elizabeth Perkins.
It was interesting to watch Josh change from being a man behaving like a child, (there were traces of Forrest Gump here!) to a man behaving like a man. There were also changes in the relationship between Josh and Billy, as Josh starts acting like a grown up dealing with a kid, rather than two kids together.
Does he choose to stay "big", or does he find a way to return to being 12? You'll have to watch it to find out!
I can't say the story was particularly credible, but it was told in a way which made it seem quite possible. There were nice touches like the big Josh trying to get the small Josh's clothes on (he ended up stealing his Dad's) and the reaction of Josh's Mum when she finds the big Josh in the house.
It was a "nice" film, some scenes are really funny, some rather poignant. It's not a classic like the ever popular Forrest Gump, (a firm favourite in our house) but a pleasant way to pass a couple of hours.
No one would buy this DVD for the extras. All they give you is the cinema trailer for the film lasting a little over two minutes.

This was a great film, always enjoyed it and so do my kids these days too... however, it's a little older than 8 years, I'm afraid: Hanks made this film in 1988, not 1998. That'll be why he looks so young ;-) Markd.
