uninitiated is no easy task. The plot in a nutshell follows lorry driver Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) into San Francisco's Chinatown, where he's embroiled in street gang warfare over the mythical/magical intentions of would-be god David Lo Pan. There are wire-fu fight scenes, a floating eyeball and monsters from other dimensions. Quite simply it belongs to a genre of its own. Carpenter was drawing on years of chop-socky Eastern cinema tradition, which, at the time of the film's first release in 1986, was regrettably lost on a general audience. Predictably, it bombed. But now that Jackie Chan and Jet Li have made it big in the West, and Hong Kong cinema has spread its influence across Hollywood, it's much, much easier to enjoy this film's happy-go-lucky cocktail of influences. Russell's cocky anti-hero is easy to cheer on as he "experiences some very unreasonable things" blundering from one fight to another, and lusts after the gorgeously green-eyed Kim Cattrall. The script is peppered with countless memorable lines, too ("It's all in the reflexes"). Originally outlined as a sequel to the equally obscureAdventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension,Big Troubleis a bona fide cult cinema delight. Jack sums up the day's reactions perfectly, "China is here? I don't even know what the Hell that means!".On the DVD:Big Trouble in Little Chinais released as a special edition two-disc set in its full unedited form. Some real effort has been put into both discs' animated menus, and the film itself is terrific in 2.35:1 and 5.1 (or DTS). The commentary by Carpenter and Russell may not be as fresh as their chat onThe Thing, but clearly they both retain an enormous affection for the film. There are eight deleted scenes (some of which are expansions of existing scenes), plus a separate extended ending which was edited out for the right reasons. You'll also find a seven-minute featurette from the time of release, a 13-minute interview with FX guru Richard Edlund, a gallery of 200 photos, 25 pages of production notes and magazine articles fromAmerican CinematographerandCinefex. Best of all for real entertainment value is a music video with Carpenter and crew (the Coupe de Villes) coping with video FX and 80s hair-dos.--Paul Tonks

Advantages: Superior action movie, cracking dialogue, excellent direction and a sublime performance from Kurt Russell Disadvantages: Might be a little to 80's for some
...films and delightful gems comes Big Trouble in Little China - probably the best of the lot!
Kurt Russell (The Thing, Escape from New York) stars as Jack Burton, a wisecracking loud-mouthed truck driver, high on listening to his own voice, low on brain cells, who thinks he knows quite a bit, but in fact knows very little. After his friend Wang Chi's (David Dunn) fiancee is kidnapped by the Lords of Death, so she can fufill the requirements of removing ... ...simply don't make anymore.
Big Trouble in Little China is a unique little movie, possibly misunderstood in its own time (resulting in it being a box office flop) but something well worth investigating amongst the current myriad of pointless sequel making and overblown CGI fests.
In the manliness and stupidity of Jack Burton, the quirky characterisations throughout (in particular the three storms and Egg Chen) and a genuinly interesting, albeit ...

...and this fact has made Big Trouble In Little China to be the best film he has ever made. One of the reasons that this film works is that it is an unashamedly Hong Kong inspired film made by a great director. But the added bonus is that he has brought in a lot of Hong Kong Actors to support the cast (With Victor Wong playing Egg Chen, and James Hong as Lo Pan) and a skilled film crew (Such as Stunt Director being who either plays a recurring character ... ...that their will be no Big Trouble In Little China 2, for it did not make a profit upon its initial cinema release.
I personally cannot recommend this film enough. However, I feel sentimental value may make this opinion biased, in that I adore watching the film, and is a great pick-me-up whenever I feel down. Friends realise I am not feeling my usual self when I begin quoting Jack Burton. Although I still have to ask the Managing Director “Are ...

China Carpentry Review ofBig Trouble In Little China DVDby
KRMkD
Advantages: Always something to keep interest, Humour Disadvantages: N/A
Big Trouble in Little China is undoubtedly Kurt Russell's best yet. The tongue in cheek humour throughout a deadly supernatural, subterrain conflict is sublime. John Carpenter has hit a gem in this production. Kurt Russell acts as Jack Burton, a run-of-the-mill type guy who works as a truck driver, fancying himself as an entertainer and woman charmer. He crosses by an old friend, Weng Chi (Dennis Dun) in China Town, San Fransisco, on a dark and stormy ... ...and ten green bottles still standing on the wall, Burton is persuaded to accompany his bud to the airport the following day. Weng's fioncée is arriving from China, Mau Yin, with a rare characteristic for a chinese girl, green eyes. However, an old, evil, ghost magician is weaving his powers down under and to appease his spiritual rulers, and to persuade them to make him flesh again, he must sacrifise such a girl with green eyes. Therefore, Mau Yin ...

...over the world, John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China eventually become a cult hit finding it real home on video, so the success should be repeated on DVD, it is no doubt John Carpenters most under rated and under seen film. Suddenly, lo and behold, fans and critics alike began to rediscover Big Trouble In Little China, and what seemed dumb, odd or just plain inexplicable back in 1986 was now suddenly brilliant. Big Trouble in little China is a strange film, it is indefinable, it is not a real martial arts film, and it is not a straight-comedy or a pure action film. It is an mixture of all these elements, spiced up with a lot of Hong Kong movie elements. Some things in the film are really far out, but to me, it is what makes it such a charming and unique experience. Genre conventions are tilted nicely. A kung-fu fighter enters ...

Big Trouble in Little China (Special Edition 2 DVD Disc set)
This happens to be one of my favourite movies from the 1980's. I am one of the many legions of John Carpenter fans and this is one of his best for the sheer joy if for nothing else. Kurt Russell plays Jack Burton who plays the role spot on, in that instead of being the macho hero who saves the day, actually saves the day more by luck than judgement. The comedy permeates this movie and ... ...buy disc. While Big Trouble in Little China may have done poorly at the box office upon its initial release, the film has been vindicated over the course of the last 15 years by earning an audience of cult film fans who love it and understand what Carpenter was trying to do. Like The Thing before it, this was a movie that was simply ahead of its time. If you’re looking for a fun, mindless, and highly entertaining action flick, then give this film ...

Advantages: some great mindless action, Russell and Cox Disadvantages: MTV style directing, dodgy plot twists, going straight to video
...A film's performance at the US box office can sometimes determine it's cinematic status in other countries. This is probably why you're yet to see 3000 Miles To Graceland grace your local fleapit, chances are it never will. The film was released in the US in March and could only ring up close to $18 million in grosses, not exactly fantastic business when the film cost around $62 million to make. Of course as always the critics played a part by critically mauling it. There had also been rumours of on set fall outs between the stars and the final cut falling into the hands of the actors rather than the film-makers. Certainly some comments by Kurt Russell on the BigTrouble In LittleChinaDVD may nod towards this.
So with the advantage of multi-region dvd I have had the chance to see the film and am left with the same conclusions that I...

Advantages: The most oustanding television series in a very nice DVD box set, roll on season 2! Disadvantages: some more extras would have been nice, but that doesn't matter really
...film/tv show and Product, from "The Simpsons" to "The X-files", "Die Hard" to "BigTrouble in LittleChina" the "24" box set is of the highest quality, from presentation of the box, insert and DVD labels themselves to the DVD presentation and picture & sound quality of the episodes (It's the kind of show to watch with a good sound system or a good pair of head phones).
If you already have, or have seen the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" or "X-files" dvd box sets, you'll understand the quality of the presentation I mean.

I'd like to point out now that with many of my reviews i have taken into account the number of extras that accompany the DVD, such as the 'making of' and interviews etc. I want to make it very clear now that it even though the box set has little or no extras, IT DOESN...
