Big Nothing
Review of Big Nothing DVD by sjp1966

Advantages: Simon Pegg
Disadvantages: limited re-watch value

Jean-Baptiste Andrea's second feature, Big Nothing, is a stylish, thriller with comedic undertones that takes us from the beginning right the way through to the end of a so called foolproof plan than we, the audience, just expect to go wrong at every available opportunity. The story is about a trio of unlikely characters whom attempt to extort money from a priest who has an unhealthy liking of illegal porn sites and snuff films. The trio in question ...
...of the movie, whereas in Big Nothing he did not have that level of influence which may of course affect the quality of the performance. David Schwimmer on the other hand I can generally take or leave. For me has never really shaken off his role as Ross in Friends, even in Band of Brothers I expected him to come out with a funny line or two, Alice Eve who plays Gus' ex Josie I've never seen or noticed before and so was therefore an unknown quantity ... There Goes Our Alibi
Review of Big Nothing DVD by Andy.mack

Advantages: Decent Cast, good direction, enjoyable film
Disadvantages: Can't quite decide which Genre it wants to be in

...some money. I think that Big Nothing must have totally passed me by in the cinema but as a huge fan of Mr Pegg it seemed a shame to let the DVD pass me by as well. Not really knowing anything about the film I ended up buying it in Sainsbury’s this afternoon and sat down to watch it this evening. Of course not really knowing anything about it meant that I had no preconceptions about the movie and so I watched and waited. To keep himself busy after ...
...they expected. I found Big Nothing to be a very enjoyable film. Of course with Pegg in one of the lead roles this was probably a given but it was surprisingly good, especially as it never seemed to appear at the cinema. My only problem with it was how to class the film, which genre it falls into. There are slight comedy elements too it and likewise there is a bit of a heist movie feel to it but it doesn’t seem to fit comfortably into either category. ... Read review

The Clue's in the Title
Review of Big Nothing DVD by afy9mab

Advantages: It has some amusing moments.
Disadvantages: It can't decide what it wants to be and tries to blind the viewer to the script's inadequacies with flashy visuals.

...favourite Jon Polito plays it big as wheezing G-man Agent Hymes, playing up the jam jar glasses and seeming ineptitude to comic effect. Mimi Rogers and Natasha McElhone are both underused in what are little more than extended cameos. The soundtrack is as scattershot as the rest of the movie, skipping from style to style seemingly on a whim. On the instrumental side, the film borrows heavily from horror movies whether with creepy string arrangements ...
...that belong to lo-fi country rock, reverberating techno, scuzzy rock, "Money" and songs from bands as disparate as Eels and Rammstein. It all feels like a belated attempt to paper over the cracks in the script and to fill in the movie when there's no dialogue. "Big Nothing" is a film that falls between two stools. There's too much farce for it to work as a heist movie and too much gore for it to function as a comedy, making it a sort of muddy comedy ... Read review

DVD Description

Charlie Wood (David Schwimmer, FRIENDS) is an unemployed teacher who is forced to seek work at a call centre in order to provide for his family, which consists of his policewoman wife and a young daughter. After being fired for insulting a customer he thought had been kept on hold, call centre employee Gus Dickinson (Simon Pegg, SHAUN OF THE DEAD) proposes a blackmailing scheme. A priest has turned up on a database of people who have accessed illegal porn sites and Gus suggests that they ask him for a large sum of money to buy their silence. When Gus’ former girlfriend Josie McBroom (Alice Eve, STARTER FOR TEN) gets wind of the scheme, the trio embark on their plan. However, things don’t go exactly the way they envisioned and problems soon start mounting up. Set mostly in the chilly night of Oregon and shot in Wales, the Isle of Man, and British Columbia, BIG NOTHING is a black comedy heist film. Jean-Baptiste Andrea (DEAD END) has crafted a sharp, funny, and smart film that makes full use of its charismatic actors. Despite its inevitable comparisons with FARGO, BIG NOTHING manages to be both inventive and witty.
