Product

The DVD case is blue with a picture of a tractor in a cog wheel, a hard hat, a spirit level and a road sign with a man digging on it. I bought this for a two year old I look after (Joe) who loves diggers, dumpers, tractors and excavators. The DVD is in three parts, each part is roughly 35 minutes long:

Road Construction Ahead
House Construction Ahead
Farm Country Ahead

Each part can be played separately through scene selections.

What's on the DVD

Come on everybody grab your hard hats and join us for 110 minutes of reality based live action, rock blasting, excavating, bull dozing, cement pouring, house building, food growing, mind blowing fun.

Road Construction Ahead

This DVD starts with two small boys playing with their dump trucks in the muck ( Joe loves this bit as it is also his favourite thing to do with his diggers and dumpers in either sand or muck). Then it goes to road construction, where you get to see the road crew build roads....thrilling stuff.

The first job is for the surveyors to check the site and help draw up the road plans. Then in come the excavators to dig dig dig.....when there's solid rock where the road needs to be built they can't use the heavy excavators they have to blow it up, using a special drill to drill into the rock they then put dynamite and liquid explosives into the holes then they all stand back Boom! Bang!. Then in come the excavators and big bucket loaders to clear away the rock they load the giant dump trucks which can carry 35 tons of stone Wow!. It shows them putting in large pipes under the roads. They then build up a layer of gravel and roll it to compact it. The tarmac is then mixed and placed on top of the gravel and then rolled. The lines are then painted on the road and the new road is finished. A warning is then given to children that they must never go near a bulding site or heavy equipment without an adult.

House Construction Ahead

The middle part of the DVD starts by showing a little girl with a toy sander sanding some wood. It then shows us how houses are built from th excavators digging to the dozers levelling the ground. You even get to watch them pouring the cement foundations and can watch them dry, Yippeee what fun!. The houses are made from timber and it shows the timber being cut from large trees. It shows how the houses are built and painted and It even shows the floorboards being laid and electricity being put in and the rooofer putting felt on the roof altogether a lot of excitment for one little boy.

Farm Country Ahead

Starts by showing a little girl making a peanut butter sandwich and wondering where food comes from. It shows a harvester, tractors, plough and all sorts of farm machinery which is used to make our food. It also shows how they plant and grow corn some of which is used for cow feed, cows need a lot of good food to make milk. Cows make 8 gallons of milk a day and eat 75lbs of feed a day. It also shows how they make the feed, the chopped corn is mixed with hay, vitamins and minerals and then fed to the cows. It then shows the cows being milked with electronic equipment and then the milk going into plastic bottles before being sent to shops and supermarkets. It also shows the calves being fed milk and feed and one calf being fed like a baby with a large bottle Ahhhh.

We then see how bread is made: the seed part of the grain the kernel is used and ground into flour and mixed with other ingredients honey, yeast and water to make bread. It shows them making bread from the harvesting of the grain to the finished product.....Bread...all the children I look after enjoy watching this bit.

We then move on to peanut butter: from the peanut plant to the harvesting of the peanuts then shelling, roasting and mixing to the end product peanut butter in a jar.........yummy.

Then picking apples, washing them, squashing them and turning them into apple jelly. Not something I have tasted but must be like jam.

Then crisps from harvesting the potatoe's to peeling, washing, slicing and frying to lovely crunchy crisps

What We Think Of This DVD Overall

Joe loves every bit of this DVD and he has watched it about 20 times so far and has not got bored of it he sits glued to the television watching this but I usually only let him watch for 20-30 minutes at a time. The DVD shows lots of different excavators, tractors, dump trucks and farm machinery so if your child likes diggers, dumpers and tractors I would highly recommend this DVD. Children are also learning while they watch I had no idea a dump truck could carry 35 tons of stone WOW! or that cows eat 75lbs of feed a day (I thought they just ate grass lol), and make about 8 gallons of milk....interesting stuff.

All the children I look after enjoy watching how some of our foods are grown and made into the end product's (milk, peanut butter, bread and crisps).

Throughout the DVD music is played (this can get a little annoying but Joe doesn't seem to mind). The drivers in the machines all wave (Joe waves back) and there are short talks from farmers and drivers about what they are doing and some interesting fun facts. Would I watch it again and again. Erm "oh Joe do I have to?"

I like the fact that real people and machines are used throughout this DVD.

Age this DVD is suitable for: Suitable for children from 18 months to 6 years, it says pre-schoolers but I have found older children enjoy this as well.
