Ok you can call me slow, I know this film has been around for a fair while now, but I have only just got round to see it. And that was simply because Virgin mega stores had a deal on videos (4 for £20). I initially bought it for the children, but thoroughly enjoyed it myself also.
Big Daddy is a film that can confidently brag both to being funny and touching. It depicts a young go-as-you-please-I-don’t-want-any-responsibility- man, whose girlfriend dumps him for an OLDER version.
Sonny Koufax (Adam Sandler-the wedding singer) portrays the young responsibility free man, whose life is about to change. Sonny pretends to be the boys’ father to the social services, who readily give the boy over to his custody. Sonnyis pretending he is the boys father, as a favour to a friend.
The film unwinds into a very funny and sometimes moving film. Sonny teaches he’s new ‘son’ –Julian (Cole and Dylan Spouse) how to piddle up a wall, how to strategically place lumps of wood to trip people up, amongst many other entertaining ‘male’ things.
But what prospects can a man who works one day a week, offer a young lad who needs a home after the d eath of his mother?
The boy manages to talk (under Sonny’s instructions) a date for Sonny with a pretty woman, after an encounter in a park. Despite her initial answer of ‘no’, the boy is again instructed in what to say, and she has to reply ‘yes’
Eventually the truth is out-that Sonny is NOT the boys father, and Julian is taken into care. Julian tells everyone that he wants to stay with Sonny, and Sonny tells them the same! Sonny is determined to win custody of the boy. As they go to court, Sonny has a legal team mainly made up from friends. He’s father another top lawyer, is in court, but to try and sway the court into NOT giving custody to he’s son (Sonny). As the court hears evidence from several people including the boy himself (who becomes invisible when he puts on his special sunglasses): and eventually Sonny’s own dad.
Sonny makes a moving speech in the court, which changes he’s own fathers mind-and he shouts aloud that he’s so should have custody. But does he get the custody of this boy that he has come to love as he’s own? Well, that will be realised by watching this excellent family movie. Sonny has another child about 28 months later with the very young lady that Julian brought together in the park!
The film is constant with the entertainment throughout, and has some very funny scenes in.
It does have some swearing in, which makes it unsuitable for the really young, but otherwise an entertaining film throughout. The film is certificate 12 and runs for about 1 and half hours.
