The Film -------- Sonny Koufax is a wacky guy who can't seem to do anything right, mainly due to his ability to screw everything up for other people. Sonny (played by Adam Sandler, from The Wedding Singer fame) is, at first desperate to hold on to his girlfriend, who gets really fed up with him acting like a little kid all the time.
At the same time a kid arrives on Sonny's doorstep, Julian - the alleged son of Koufax's friend, and Sonny has an idea. He temporarally adopts the kid and shows (badly) that he can be responsible. Unfortunately for him though, his girlfriend isn't interested and he ends up alone and having to look after a kid with no previous experience and a certain lack of maternal instinct! His first problem is Julian's bedwetting, which he solves by laying newspaper on the bed, and then Julian's spilling milk, which he also solves by laying down newspaper (not exactly someone you'd invite to babysit then)
The interaction between Sonny and Julian (played by twins!) is fantastic and leads to some great comedy moments such as when Julian needs the toilet and Sonny is in a hurry to get somewhere, he has to think fast! He also gains some knowledge of what it is to be responsible and to look after someone. The realisation comes to a head when Julian is described as 'smelly' at school!
Helping Sonny along is his delivery man (played brilliantly by Rob Schneider) who needs more looking after than Julian does! At one great point in the movie, Sonny holds up a card for Julian's reading test and Schneider's reply when trying to read it himself is hilarious. The cast is completed with a great cameo by Steve Buscemi, who plays a homeless man that Sonny takes pity on.
The DVD ------- There are two versions of this film on the double sided disc. One is the full screen version (4.3 ratio) and the other is the widescreen version (which I prefer) This is a nice change from having to change the picture through your DVD player and squashing it or putting up with large black borders on normal screen televisions.
There is a fairly short feature on the making of the movie, which doesn't really tell you too much but gives you an insight into the characters from the actors that portray them.
Added to this are the usual trailers and filmographies (that I find quite useful when I recognise an actor in another movie) and also two music videos, one of Sheryl Crow murdering Sweet Child O' Mine and the other of Garbage, which is a lot better.
As a package, this DVD offers nothing new, but it has a few nice extras and is a very funny and touching film, so it's worth getting for the movie alone. One for the Hip Hop Annonymous I think.
ndler) has spent his whole life avoiding responsibility. But when his girlfriend dumps him for an older man he's got to find a way to prove he's ready to grow up. In a despera...
