Adam Sandler is back in another comedy, this time as an irresponsible bloke playing father to a young boy. Big Daddy is frequently funny, although usually “huh-huh-huh” funny rather than “ha-ha-ha-he-he-he-ha” funny, if you get what I mean. I was pleased to see Steve Buscemi picking up a hilarious role, as he is probably the best actor in the film. As well as the comedy, Big Daddy is occasionally heart-warming, especially as we delve into the relationship between Sandler and his father at the same time as that between him and the child. And the young boy has an uncanny ability to make the audience go “aaaahhhhh”, before sinking back into their popcorn embarrassed. The extra features on the DVD are not great, but better than nothing I suppose. Big Daddy is not a great film, but it’s reasonably funny and worth seeing – but not buying if possible, unless you’re a fan of the genre or of Adam Sandler.
