does that sound familiar? If not, and you have kids it won't be long until your humming along too!
If you haven't seen it i'll explain. Shown on CBeebies Big Cook, Little Cook are a genius culinary duo! The 2 characters Big Cook Ben and Little Cook Small run a cafe together and cook for all their amazing guests in this DVD. On this DVD which by the way lasts 100 minutes we see Frankie the Footballer, Denise the Dentist, a Clown and a disco dancer arrive to eat something delicious cooked by our favourite chef duo!
Each of the four episodes have the same format... the nice song above with its catchy tune as the intro, then some chit chat from the two cooks, then the bell rings to say that someone has entered the cafe! Little Cook Small who by the way is very small probably about 6/7 inches tall! gets on his magic spoon and flies to the hatch to see who it is. They then go on to discuss what they will cook from the "Big Cook Cookery Book". Once decided Little Cook Small will read out the ingredients and Big Cook Ben will get them and lo behold, there is always something missing! So Little Cook Small tootles off on his "magic" spoon (i guess its a broomstick for chefs???) to get the missing ingredient! For instance in the football episode we are missing Cress, and the kids get to see how its grown and the clown is missing strawberries and so Little Cook meets a little girl and her mother and go strawberry picking so the children watching actually get to see where their food comes from.
Little Cook Small then arrives back from the his mini-adventure and together the 2 cooks proceed to cook for their guest and after doing so clean up! (we get another good song with actions for that bit!)
The recipies that are featured are easy for the children to make and usually have minimal ingredints (so none of the teaspoon of this and a teaspoon of that.) They have healthy ingredients (limited chocolate and sweeties!) in the dentist epsiode they make melon smiles with melon, strawberries, grapes and creme fraiche. In this particular episode Big Cook Ben has a toothache and they promote washing your teeth twice a day and visitng the dentist. They put a positive spin on visiting the dentist and don't make it sound like its not scary at all!!!
Whilst cooking they make sure they give warnings about the dangers in the kitchen for instance when venturing near the cooker Big Cook Ben will say "Always get your grown up helper to use the oven as its HOT HOT HOT!" They also encourage children to wash their hands and clear up afterwards!
Now if after watching it you are inclined to take your little terror into the kitchen and cook up some of these delicious treats the DVD has its own recipe book with easy to follow instructions and pictures of each ingredient so that the children can recognise them.
Oh and beware there is lots of Big Cook Little Cook merchandise including scales, ice lolly kit, Big Cooks Cookery Book and they are all available in the Early Learning Centre and other outlets!
PS The ratings are given from my 3 yr olds prospective - not mine! Except Value for money - thats my view, it keeps him entertained for hours!
