Director Nora Ephron (SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, YOU'VE GOT MAIL) breathes new life into the classic television show BEWITCHED in this romantic comedy of the same name. Movie star Jack...
more...Wyatt (Will Ferrell) had it all until he made a few bad films and his wife left him. Now, the washed up star is slated to play Darrin in a remake of the 1960s sitcom about a mortal man who unknowingly marries a beautiful, good-hearted witch. Determined to resuscitate his career, Jack and his agent, Richie (Jason Schwartzman), demand that an unknown be cast as the witch, Samantha, in order to maximise his screen time and star power. After an exhaustive search for the right actress and the perfect nose wiggle Jack spots Isabel Bigelow (Nicole Kidman) in a book store and is convinced that she can be the new Samantha. And right he is; Isabel really is a witch who is determined to try life and hopefully love without magic, much to the chagrin of her debonair warlock father, Nigel (Michael Caine). Immediately drawn to Jack, Isabel follows her heart and takes the role only to discover that he has no plan to share the spotlight with her, and can also be a big jerk. Can Isabel refrain from using magic to put Jack in his place and win his love? And how will Jack react when he learns Isabel's secret? More interesting than a standard remake, the screenplay by Ephron and her sister Delia nicely weaves in the characters and basic plot of the original television series while developing a completely new story and characters. Shirley MacLaine stars as a legendary actress who plays Samantha's mother, Endora, in the new television show and just may have a few secrets of her own. Steve Carell has an amusing turn as Uncle Arthur, a character originally played by comedian Paul Lynde.

From 1964-1972, we saw the making of a family light hearted comical series known as Bewitched. This series cast a spell across the whole nation and beyond.

My Family grew up with the hit comedy series and to this day still watch the re-runs on the sky network, so when I heard that a film had been commissioned to commemorate celebrate its fine comedy and family viewing I was certainly intrigued.

So in 2005 the film was released by Columbia Pictures and the nation flocked to the cinema to watch, I personally did not have the time due to other commitments to get to the big screen, but as soon as the DVD hit the shelves it was the first thing in my basket.

So with son in tow we settled down to watch it.

General Gist
________

This supposed remake was far from that, it was a film about a real life single witch that gets caught up in the remake of the hit series "bewitched" where she would play Samantha and a lay about down on his luck actor plays the part of Darrin.

After magical twists and annoyance by the real witch, they fall in love and as per the film she has the audios task to explain to the actor that she is a real life witch.

Verdict
___

What can I say it was embarrassing to watch, it was evident that the writer had influenced proceeding and what use to be a classic series was shown to be nothing but the bewitched backdrop with all the key aspects that made the show removed.

There was no sparkle no pizzazz and most of all no magic in my eyes, it just seemed like they had made a laughing stock of the show and all that it had ever represented.

Nicole Kidman who played Isabel Bigelow/Samantha and Will Ferrell who played Jack Wyatt/Darrin must have hidden in shame knowing that they had anything to do with this cult series massacre

I did not enjoy it, nor did I even find that it was a family film that passed the time, it embarrassed and bored me.

The story was dull, and in parts you could see that they were desperate for things to appear comical, and when you have to try that much you know it will be a disaster.

Main Characters/Actors
___________________

Nicole Kidman - Isabel Bigelow/ Samantha
Will Ferrell - Jack Wyatt
Shirley Maclaine - Iris Smythson/Endora
Michael Caine - Nigel Bigelow

Verdict
___

Every part was played poorly and not it true character to that of the series. I as an actor would be ashamed of the association of being with this film. The characters themselves make the actors look week, so no one even looks at what they may have done acting wise.

Soundtrack
_________

The only redeemable feature they actually played the original Bewitched theme tune - da da da da ....

Now that is bewitching.

Other Data
_______

Run time = 1 Hr 38 mins

Languages = English, Hindi

Certificate = PG

Overall
______

I have heard nothing but slatings of this film and I am sorry that I could not find anything to combat these.

There were A list actors set up for this film, funding in place, but the story let it down which meant everything else was let down in the process.

Characters that were meant to be comical were a flop; jokes were a waste of time and lost on the audience as they were trying to hard to understand why the film was not what it said Bewitched.

Congratulations on a huge flop to whoever endorsed this, they should have seen from the on set that this was sub standard work.

In conclusion, I would not watch this film again if you paid me, well unless it was a six figure sum anyway.

I personally will give my copy to anyone that wants it for the price of the postage. If you are having problems sleeping, don't consult the doctor watching this will soon do the trick.
