Released in 1987, this hour and forty minute movie follows in the footsteps of Axel Foley, the maverick cop from Detroit who seems to end up fighting crime on the calm streets of Beverly Hills.
**BRIEF PLOT**
In Beverly Hills there are some high class robberies going on under the guise of 'The Alphabet crime' and the Beverly Hills police department are investigating… The now Captain Andrew Bogomil, (played by Ronny Cox), Detective Billy Rosewood, (played by Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart, (played by John Ashton) are following many leads to try and catch the culprits before they strike again… There investigations are being slightly hampered by the new chief of police Harold Lutz, (played by Allen Garfield), a very arrogant person who likes to shout a lot…
Things take a turn for the worst when Bogomil is seriously injured in the line
of duty by a rather tall assailant…
When Axel Foley, (played by Eddie Murphy) hears about Bogomil he heads straight for Beverly Hill to help Taggart and Rosewood find out who is responsible for Bogomils injuries and if they are connected to the Alphabet crimes…?
Staying in a rather grand mansion, which he manages to 'acquire', with his ability to charm the birds out of the trees, he begins his investigation into what the Beverly Hills crime wave and Bogamils serious assault…but he is soon hampered from all corners, from the political correctness of the local Mayor and the chief of police to a rather tall leggy blond called Karla Fry, (played by Brigitte Nielson) who runs the Beverly Hills gun club…
But Foley is adamant that he will bring the culprits to justice… even if it does mean tracking a suspect to the local Playboy Mansion….???
**CHARACTERS**
Eddie Murphy as Detective Axel Foley Judge Reinhold as Detective Billy Rosewood Ronny Cox as Captain Andrew Bogomil John Ashton as Detective Seargent John Taggart Jürgen Prochnow as Maxwell Dent Brigitte Nielsen as Karla Fry Allen Garfield as Police Chief Harold Lutz Dean Stockwell as Charles "Chip" Cain Paul Reiser as Detective Jeffrey Friedman Gil Hill as Inspector Douglas Todd Paul Guilfoyle as Nikos "Nik" Thomopolis Robert Ridgely as Mayor Ted Egan Alice Adair as Jan Bogomil
**IN CONCLUSION**
This sequel is just as good as its predecessor, Beverly Hill Cop, if not slightly better, and is well worth watching…
The action is as full on as any good movie requires to keep the audience entertained, without becoming too boring due to the over the top story line or totally stupid special effects… Eddie Murphy is his usual self as the renegade cop with a thirst for thrills and hot babes… his clumsy tactics to date woman are so comical that you feel sorry for him in parts…although he seem to be more successful than your average gigolo.
I must admit that I was quite frightened by the gun toting and rather leggy Bridget Neilson in her role as the not so nice gun club manageress Karla… she really is in a class of her own, but I cannot decide whether her looks out way her acting skills as I soon found myself engrossed when she appeared on screen?.. She certainly turns heads as she struts her stuff..!
The story is well written and the sometimes 'dodgy' acting does not spoil the movie in any way at all, giving all round entertainment and a good hour and forty minutes of none stop action, stunts, bloodshed, comedy and maybe the odd car chase…and I mean odd.
This movie does introduce the soon to be famous and very comical Chris Rock, starring later in such movies as 'I'm gonna get you sucka' (1988) 'Beverly Hills Ninja' (1997), 'Lethal Weapon 4' (1998) and not forgetting his voice over for the part of Marty in Madagascar 1 and 2...plus many other movies of course.
*Would I recommend this…? Hell…yes…! Eddie Murphy is pure genius as the wise cracking copper with the ability to irritate the bad guy until they make a mistake… It is as good as the first Beverly Hills Cop opener with just as much action, if not more.. And even if you have never seen the first Beverly Hill Cop movie it wont matter because the reason for the Detroit copper being in Beverly hills doesn't really matter as the action and thrills are enough to make you enjoy the movie regardless…
If you have seen the first Beverly Hills Cop movie then you'll want to get this sequel, but even if you have never seen the first then you'll still enjoy this one and you can get it from www.amazon.com for around £11.00...
