The Synopsis
The main character Maggie (Karyn Dwyer) leaves school and works in a gay bookshop, her mother, divorcing her father announces that she is to move into Maggie's flat with her brother. Maggie has to find a flat, but what she also finds is Kim (Christina Cox), her new girlfriend. What will her mother say? What will happen to Francis, the 10% books owner, her transexual friend Judy and a vast array of other characters who the audience will become fond of?
I first watched this film with my first gf. I was young and it opened up my eyes to many things. I think this is tha main reason why I love it so much. I dont know where to start, there is so much to mention. It is not just a lesbian film. It focuses on Kim and Maggies relationship but also broaches other areas, divorce, parental relationships, transsexual relationships and sexual relations. These themes are all approached with a comical twist. The scene in which Maggies mother discovers an array of sex toys left by the previous owner is nicely teamed up with opera. There are many ups and downs dring this film, several techniques have been used, escecially when all the tension builds up to an explosive ending. The films follows parallel storylines involving all the characters which revolves around the bookstore and local lesbian nightclub. The characters are all involved with each other somehow so it all ties in very well. I find it difficult to find any criticisms for this film, this may be because I am biased and when I think of this film it always brings back fond memories. I can say that it is not for everybody, I have found mixed opinions of this film everywhere, often the acting is criticised. I should thing it would appeal to a mainly female audience. I reccomend you at least watch it the once, ts romantic, comical, sad, happy all at once and it is one of my favourites.
