I use a Manfrotto 334B professional for very fast reaction shots and an adapted Manfrotto 679b with added base for extra support. I also have a Cobra lightweight for use with medium weight camera and lens.
You may want to set up a professional studio, in which case a heavy tripod would be more use as you are not going to be moving it around very frequently. There are these and all the gear for lighting there on the market. You will want to consider light and shade if you do portrait type photography

Fry LightBetter than Butter:
After the other half?s recent shock heart attack we have been living on a ?cardio-proactive? diet as recommended by The British Heart Foundation. We have had to change a lot of our diets and one of the big no-nos is saturated fat. With that in mind I browsed round the oil section of the super market and I noticed the Fry Light range of spray oils. I chose the buttery one for use frying onions and to add a little flavour to mash potatoes.
The spray comes in a pump action container made of plastic with a green plastic lid. I actually hate the packaging as I find it garish but it serves it purpose well. There is loads of information on the package including nutritional info, suggested uses, ingredients etc.
The spray allows you to use less fat, (only 0.1g per spray), but it isn?t actually low fat with 55.2g ...
Advantages: Great fun, A hobby that can create an income, produces artwork for your home, etc etc! Disadvantages: Can get expensive...

Many of the above reasons may not instantly shout out at you for a photographer, but I feel that a compact point and shoot camera can be very useful for someone that has no previous experience in photography, particularly camera's like Casio Exilims for example, that have a host of premade solutions for specific photographic situations, for example, 'Sunset' and 'Portrait'. This can be very useful when you are starting.
Disadvantages:
Poor lens quality
Little zoom functionality
Little closeup functionality
Can be very noisy in Low-Light
Flash can be useless
Manual control is missing entirely
Small, therefore losable, damageable...
