variety of steam interest. In Middleton, near the centre of Leeds, one of the world's oldest railways has been resurrected, while the Bowes Railway still works its early rope hauled inclines. In the Lake District, narrow gauge steam conveys tourists through the beautiful scenery of Ravenglass and Eskdale, but equally delightful are the standard gauge railways over the North Yorkshire Moors, and in the high valley of South Tyneside.

Advantages: Fantasitc footage of the last days of steam Disadvantages: None
This is another in the eminently professionally produced DVD programmes on steam train released through Green Umbrella.
With the Very Best of British Steam of Yesteryear, you are given a real feast for the eyes and also, for the memory, of course. Well, for those of us old enough to remember when steam trains regularly plied their business up and down the main lines of the United Kingdom.
The last regular steam runs in Britain came to a very sad halt in August 1968. That's slightly under a year before the first manned space flight to the moon, for those interested in transport trivia.
Without an unsung bunch of dedicated enthusiasts and professional and semi-professional film makers in the previous two decades, these wonderful steam trains would not be available to the general public. They would only exist as the personal ...
Advantages: Bill Bailey & Dylan Moran at their best Disadvantages: That not more people have watched it.
Originally shown on Channel 4 in 2000, Black Books had me in hysterics from the start. The comedy is dark and unmistakably British, which is what makes it such a fantastic programme. Written by Graham Lineham (creator of Father Ted) with Dylan Moran (who stars in the programme), this is in my opinion one of the greatest comedies (but seriously under-rated) ever made. I think either you'll love it or hate it!
As our TV aerial blew off the roof over the weekend we spent a happy Monday evening watching series 1 of Black Books again!
Black Books is based in a second-hand bookshop in London called (unsurprisingly!) "Black Books". It is owned and 'run' by Bernard Black (Dylan Moran) a grumpy unkempt Irish bloke who is lost without a fag in one hand and bottle of wine in the other! Bernard hates customers, he hates selling books ...
an idiot who makes a fool of himself every day. It's painful to watch his cringeworthy antics, and yet there's something loveable about him.
Whilst Brent is undoubtedly the star of the show, there are still many other strong characters with their own storylines; Tim and Dawn are in love with eachother but won't admit it, and then there's Gareth! Gareth is an army obsessed teacher's pet, who is just too tempting to Tim to wind up.
So what happens when you watch 'The Office'? You sit through half an hour of a paper office's day and you laugh, a lot. It's Britishcomedy, understated and subtle in its most part. As the show goes on you get tuned into Brent's facial expressions and body language, and it makes you laugh, hard. The US version of the show is great, but it's a clear example of what this show is not - the US show is full of staged ...
