This is the second series in the comical adventures of the sun seekers on their All Inclusive Holiday at the Salana resort in Benidorm. The show was first aired on ITV in March and April 2008 and was released on DVD in November of the same year.
** BRIEF PLOT…
It’s a return for the British sun seekers at the Salana resort for another week of sun , fun, and unfortunately total chaos, as the same old familiar guest reappear for another All Inclusive holiday. But with a couple of additional guest appearing on the scene since the first series the fun in the sun just gets better and better, especially with marriage proposals and competition challenges.
** THE GUESTS…
The Garvey family, including Dad, Mick, (Steve Pemberton), a lazy loud mouth who dislikes hard work. Mum, Janice, ( Siobhan Finneran), who always seems to engage her mouth before her brain, which causes some difficult situations. Then there’s the Garvey kids, Chantelle, (Hannah Hobley), who is a young mother to Coolio, although she is always trying to palm her baby off with anyone who shows any signs of attention. And then there’s Michael, (Oliver Stokes), who is your typical hyperactive kid and a total handful for his parents. Then there’s physically challenged Madge Baron, (Sheila Reid), Janice’s mother, who speeds around the resort on her mobility scooter, with her acid tongue and no nonsense attitude. Other guests include Gavin Ramsbottom, (Hugh Sachs) and his boyfriend Troy, (Paul Bazely), who both think they are far better than the other guests at the hotel, but still seem to fit into the day to day routine. Donald Stewart,_(Kenny Ireland)_ and his wife Jacqueline, (Janine Duvitski) are the happy go lucky guest of a certain age who seem to have a very open marriage, sometimes involving other people. The pair do tend to enjoy spending time doing certain activities. Then there’s the spoilt and slightly arrogant Geoff Maltby, (Johnny Vegas), aka ‘ the oracle’ who is on holiday once again with his mother Noreen, (Elsie Kelly), who is so laid back she’s almost horizontal. Finally for the guest there is Melvin Churchill Harvey, ( Geoffrey Hutchings), who enjoys wearing thongs and rarely anything else as he wonders around the resort. He comes across as a little bit tedious with his stories of how he made his riches.
All the guests are looked after by the ever so arrogant and very smarmy waiter Maeto, (Jake Canuso), who thinks every woman who looks at him will fall madly in love with him, and then there’s Janey York, (Crissy Rock), a mad holiday rep with a zest for life, who seems to end up taking the flack for all the troubles in and around the complex.
So with the guest settling in for another holiday at the Salana resort there is soon more of the same mayhem and chaos waiting to pounce.
** SERIES TWO…
(aired on ITV March 28th until April 16th 2008)
EPISODES…
* 1) The usual faces arrive at the hotel for there yearly ‘All Inclusive’ holiday in the sun, with the same old mixture of moaners, swingers and shear brazenness. There is an addition to the group in the form Madge’s new ‘fancy man, the very bronzed Mel and his rather skimpy swim wear. So with most of the guests settled in it is not long before the usual chaos begins, including a naughty surprise for Kate and Martin on a site seeing tour and a deadly diving game between Geoff and Mel, much to Gavin and Troy’s horror as they arrive amongst the chaos.
* 2) It’s karaoke night at the hotel and Mel decides to do a little more than a bad rendition of ‘Lonely girl’, and there is a bit of trouble for Geoff when he tries to apologise for nearly killin Mel. Meanwhile, Martin and Kate end up baby sitting for Coolio, Chantelle’s baby and soon find that entertaining a baby is not as easy as they first thought.
* 3) Mel and Madge’s are the talk of the hotel after their surprise announcement, but Madge’s family are not to pleased at all, especially as no one really knows who Mel is. Geoff and his mother, Noreen, are setting up an arm-wrestling contest which soon turns into more than using the arms, especially for Martin as he tries to settle a score with Mateo. And Kate is upset when she realises that Mateo doesn’t even remember her from there previous encounter a year earlier.
* 4) Most of the guest take a day trip to watch a free Bull fight but they are soon having to reassess the word ‘free’, and Mel’s holiday turns sour once more, frightening everyone with his shocking luck. Meanwhile, back at the hotel, Geoff and Chantelle seem to be getting a little closer, until Geoff opens his mouth.
* 5) Mateo has more than enough to deal with when he tries to get back with his old flame, Kelly. Meanwhile, Madge is a little aggrieved when she thinks Mel is being chatted up by Kelly’s mother Sylvia, leading to some to some dramatic scenes around the pool.
* 6) Mick and Janice are still slightly suspicious of Mel and are trying hard to stop Madge from marrying him, much to Madge’s disgust. Unfortunately, Mick is soon in Janice’s bad books when he forgets a special date, leading to her turning to others for comfort. Meanwhile, Donald and Jacqueline have a rather special way to teach Mateo a lesson, they say revenge is a dish best served cold.
* 7) Geoff and Chantelle’s ‘date’ goes a little bit wrong when the subject of sex comes up. Janice is in more trouble than she realises when her new ‘friend’ reappears on the scene, causing a lot of hassles for her marriage. Meanwhile, it’s closing in on the marriage of the years at the Salana resort.
* 8) Mick’s mind is quickly turned when he discovers the truth about Mel, therefore giving his blessing for the marriage to his mother-in-law. Mel and Geoff are at it again with their competitive ways, leading to more dangerous results. Meanwhile, the wedding of the year is interrupted in by a winged fat angel, causing Mick to take drastic action, much to the horror of the guests.
** IN CONCLUSION…
A brilliant second series which has as much, if not more humour than the first series.
The format for the show is simple, get a vast array of different people, bung them into a half decent hotel in sunny Spain and see what develops… simple really… and the format works really well indeed, (possibly even better than the first series), bringing some really comical episodes throughout the entire series, and what I can only describes as on hell of a dramatically fantastic finale, which will no doubt lead onto a third series.
And thankfully, for the sake of all the series one fans, the powers that be have decided to keep the same old faces and have therefore kept the same excellent standard of acting, again including Pemberton, Finneran, Hobley and Stokes, who continue to entertain with their magnificent portrayal of the family from hell, and with Reid being even more aggressive as the not so mobile mother-in-law who still won’t take any rubbish from anyone, Burns and Cruttenden are still great as the play young married couple with a few troubles, again acting as if they were actually a couple in real life. Ireland and Dubinsky are again utterly brilliant as the O.A.Ps with what seems to be an even more very open minded relationship style which continues to shock even the most hardened viewer. And Sachs, together with Bazely, are just so comical as the ‘camp’ couple who sometimes seem to look down their noses at the others.
Again, this series is a cracking comical entertaining show with many light hearted moments, even though poor Mel seems to be the brunt of many misfortunate events and some deadly moments. Although I would not advice the Benidorm tourist company use this as an advertisement for their All Inclusive
