Advantages: Pure entertainment Disadvantages: Nothing more
You know when you go to the pictures just because you can’t be bothered to do anything else, and you’re not really expecting much from the film, but it turns out to be great? Well, that’s what happened to me with ‘Bend it Like Beckham’. I went into the cinema tired, lethargic and a bit down in the dumps, and came out full of beans and in a very cheery, hopeful mood indeed.
Directed by Gurinder Chadha (previously known for ‘Bhaji On The Beach’), ... ...a teenage girl with Indian roots who’s mad on football, and even madder on Goldenballs himself. To the despair of her rather traditionalist parents, her bedroom is covered in Beckham pictures which she talks to in the way that others write a diary.
Jess is a tomboy, and she’s good at it. She easily outclasses the lads in the park when she joins in their football games, and it’s during one of these games that she’s spotted by Jules (Keira Knightley), ...

Advantages: Humorous, family entertainer, value for money! Disadvantages: Duration a bit too long!
...Is East and Monsoon Wedding, Bend It Like Beckham is set in Britain’s Asian community, but appeals to a wider audience. Let me tell you a bit about the film… +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Credits: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Certificate: 12 Running time: 113 mins Starring: Parminder Nagra, Anupam Kher, Shaheen Khan, Juliet Stevenson, Archie Panjabi, Kulvinder Ghir, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Keira Knightley, ... ...Analysis: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Bend It Like Beckham is an outright entertainer that raises issues that everyone in the audience can relate to in some way or another. Regardless of cultural and ethnic background, all the teenagers in the film have conflict with their parents for some reason or another. The general messages that are conveyed during the film are about girls gaining equality in what has been a traditionally male ...

Advantages: excellent film, great acting, wonderful soundtrack Disadvantages: none that I can think of
...think I ended up enjoying Bend It Like Beckham even more than the kids did! The basic plot is that Jess (short for Jessminder) Bhamra is an Asian teenage girl who loves football. She enjoys nothing more than a kick about in the park with the lads, where she brings down many male egos with her skills at ball handling (Take that how you want!). Her family want her to be more ladylike though. They feel she needs to become skilled in the traditional ... ...aren’t so laboured here and Bend It Like Beckham remains a generally upbeat film. We have the problems of race, especially the way each generation views its importance. The older members of the Indian community are very traditional, with the younger ones being quite happy to wear fashionable clothes, speak in London slang and have sex in cars. Homosexuality is also touched on, the rights or wrongs of a coach/pupil relationship and racism. The ...

Advantages: Good performances all round Disadvantages: Badly shot and edited in places
Bend It Like Beckham is directed by Gurinder Chadha (of ‘Bhaji On The Beach’ fame), the film begins by introducing Jess (Parminder Nagra), a Punjabi teenage girl who loves football, and has a penchant for David Beckham. Nagra puts in a wonderful performance as Jess, and has the right look for the role. She looks very comfortable onscreen, whether on the pitch or in a nightclub. It is when she’s thrashing boys in a football game ... ...who gets Jess into the local women’s team. From hereon things get interesting, Jess gets into training and keeps it from her parents because her parents are quite traditional. The whole cast are very good and my favourite performances are by Archie Panjabi (who plays Jess’s sister Pinky) and Jonathon Rhys Myers who plays Joe the football Coach. Pinky is seeing a guy behind her parents back and is totally different to Jess. I find her ...

...Since the release of Bend It Like Beckham, I have wanted to see it, but decided to wait because of my hatred of the flicks. So yesterday I sent my other half (not better half) into the video shop to rent this out. She came back with 3!!
Grrrrr! Waste of money, because we wont have time to watch the others. (could have went to the flaming pictures for the money she paid).
Anyway I digress.
I have seen the trailers before, but not one talented actress ... ...Bhamra
Shaheen Khan---Mrs Bhamra
Bend it like Beckham, is a about a 18 yr old girl Jess, who dreams of playing professional football. She dreams of being able to bend the ball around a wall like David Beckham. Dreams? What dreams?, she’s a girl, she’s Indian. Girls can’t play football, certainly not Indian ones.
Jessie’s parents won’t allow it, their daughter is going to go to University, become a solicitor and learn how to cook Aloo Gobi. Jules ...

...the fact that's a musical may put other people of as well but for the people who have seen the film but haven't read the book yet, they might want to read it to understand where Gurinder Chadha was coming from.
I must say though that even though I liked this film, I preferred Bend it likeBeckham, which is also written and directed by Gurinder Chadha.

Advantages: Colourful, energetic, hilarious and romantic! Disadvantages: Don't be expecting the BBC adaptation with Colin Firth!
...Hi everyone - hope you are all coping in the heat! Sticking with that theme, I have just watched a 'sizzling' film. I decided to treat myself to the DVD of 'Bride and Prejudice, which was on special offer at Somerfield for £3.99. This film is directed by Gurinder Chadha, who also directed 'Bend It LikeBeckham' which I really enjoyed, so I thought it might be worth a look. The DVD contains the 106mins film and lots of special features.
~~The Film~~
Where do I begin? The film is so full of colour, vibrancy and hilarity, that it is hard to know where to start. As the title suggests, the film is heavily inspired by Jane Austen's classic novel 'Pride and Prejudice' - a love story beset by pre-conceived ideas and awkward misunderstandings. However, given that the director is Gurinder Chadha, she draws on her Indian roots and gives it a full...

DVD Description
Jess Bhamra (Parminder K. Nagra) wants two things--to become a great football player like David Beckham and to find a nice boyfriend. And she soon gets a chance at both when she befriends Jess (Keira Knightley), joins her football team, and falls for the coach, Joe (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers). However, her traditional Indian family frowns on the entire scenario, instead encouraging her spend time in the kitchen learning recipes for aloo gobi and chapatti. And it doesn't help that Jess also has a crush on Joe. Combining good-natured humour with football, drama, and romance, Gurinder Chadha's BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM is a winning comedy with heart.
