The sequel to the romantic film before sunrise took almost a decade to come out. Before sunrise ended with the lovers(strangers is a better word actually) going apart in the railway station. For years, different viewers must have thought of a different end to the story. We kept wondering how the story really ended. I don't think that the sequel was on the cards initially, but probably the makers felt there was a possibility of a sequel here. Who's complaining? What we have here is a film which is equally beautiful, romantic and realistic. Its usually hard to match up to the first film of a series but this is an exception.
If people thought they had met after those months and got together, they are in for a surprise(Then again, they would not have made another film if they already ended up together in the first place). The story continues after 9 years after the night, where Ethan is in Paris to promote his book which he actually wrote about his memories of that night nine years ago. We see Julie Delpy who came to meet Hawke there, and this is the first time they are meeting after 9 years.
What follows is the story of that day, from that time till sunset, as Ethan has a flight to catch later that evening. We see the two of them talking, talking about life in these 9 years, talking about love and relations. Its a fantastic script, the film kept down to just over an hour, making sure that the film is compact and manages to hold the audiences throughout the duration. Its so essential that the dialogues are realistic, yet witty. It seems like they are soul mates, and the conversation is diverse and straight from heart. As an audience, you would feel sorry for them, you would wish they were together! The film has the added advantage of already established characters and there is fantastic chemistry between the two actors here. The film also deals with the idea of love, in very modern terms and the idea of marriage and life.I won't give out the ending but its very appropriate, and keeps the audience begging for more! Don't miss this film for anything. And if you still haven't seen Before sunrise, then watch that too!
