Before Sunrise is the ultimate summer romance to watch. It is terribly romantic without ever being soppy or cliched. I watched this film with my boyfriend who dislikes most romances, and he really enjoyed this one.
However the films appeal is not only due to the romantic storyline and the stunning Julie Delpy or Ethan Hawke, but to the beautiful shots of Vienna and the way the director captures the city. There are wonderful shots of people sitting in cafes, or performing on the street, which really draw you into the film and make you feel you are there with the characters seeing what they are seeing.
A similar method is used for the sequel, Before Sunset, in Paris with some wonderful shots of the city. However compared to Before Sunrise, which has a wonderfully young and innocent glow to it, this is a much more serious and slightly darker film which suits the characters who have grown older and more cynical about life.

The pairing of July Delpy with Ethan Hawke is excellent. Delpy is the French girl that every man imagines he will meet on a summer holiday, beautiful and interesting. Ethan Hawke is nervous and unsure of himself, but has a clumsy charm.
I confess to feeling rather dubious when I heard they were going to make a sequel of Before Sunrise, thinking they could not possibly achieve anything as good as the first film. But Before Sunset has a power of its own, though it will never match the wonderful freshness of Before Sunrise, and indeed does not try to but instead looks back upon it with regret and irony.
I still prefer to think of Before Sunrise with no sequel, a film complete in itself, but when I am feeling particularly desirous I will pull out Before Sunset and complete the story.
Advantages: Superbly written, romantic, great acting, feels real, long waited sequel Disadvantages: none whatsoever!
wish won't be granted!
Yet, we all know that they dearly love each other! Personally I have never seen a film that feels so real and I have never seen on screen, or real life, two people with such great understanding. I literally waited 10 years for a sequel of this film and I wasn't disappointed by "BeforeSunset".
Do these two characters stay together in the end? I won't tell you that. For this you must see this film. And if possible, see the two: "BeforeSunrise" and "BeforeSunset".
There is a box set that includes the two. The DVD for "BeforeSunset" includes special features that comprise of subtitles (I like to have the English subtitles so that I can read all they say as well. English is not my first language and I don't want to miss a bit), and a documentary of the making of the film with the director, film crew ...
BEFORE SUNRISE: When a young American (Ethan Hawke) traveling through Europe by train meets a beautiful French student (Julie Delpy), he convinces her to spend the day with him in Vienna so the two can get to know each other better. They spend their day exploring the city and before they know it, they find themselves falling in love. Richard Linklater's romantic daydream is a warm and witty comedy that uses the beautiful streets of Vienna as a perfect backdrop for the characters' youthful, budding romance. BEFORE SUNSET: Nine years ago, director Richard Linklater's BEFORE SUNRISE introduced American twentysomething Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and French twentysomething Celine (Julie Delpy). The two met on a train to Vienna, and spent the night together wandering around the city, talking, and falling for each other. They parted ways, vowing to meet in Vienna in six months. Linklater's latest film, BEFORE SUNSET, picks up where the 1994 film left off. In Paris promoting a novel he has written about their one perfect night together (the two were never reunited), Jesse is dumbfounded when Celine shows up at his last bookstore interview. With just a few hours remaining before his flight back to the States, Jesse and Celine meander through Paris, returning in no time at all to their playful banter, flirtation, and intense conversations about life, love, and the state of the world. Although the sexual tension is palpable, Jesse is married--albeit unhappily--and has a young son, and Celine has a boyfriend. Are these thirtysomethings really soul mates, or ships destined to keep passing in the night?
Deeply romantic and quietly captivating. (Daily Express, )
Too damn good to be ignored (Empire, )
Excellent...funny, charming (The Sun, )
...one of the most rewarding films of the year (The Times, )
