As a fan of animated animal movies such as Happy Feet and Finding Nemo, I was pleased to see adverts for Bee Movie - it just looked so cute, of course I had to give it a try!
In case you couldn't guess from the title, Bee Movie is based around, well, bees. More specifically, it is about a young bee called Barry who just can't decide what he wants to do with his life. It is traditional for all of the bees to only work in one job for their entire life, and he just can't choose which area is right for him. He decides to give pollen collecting a go, however whilst out collecting pollen he gets trapped in the rain and ends up inside a human house where everybody tries to kill him - with the exception of a woman called Vanessa who saves his life. And, somewhat oddly, he ends up falling in love with her. He begins to visit her frequently and accompanies her on trips. Until he visits the supermarket with her, discovers that honey is for sale, and then attempts to sue the human race for stealing honey from bees.
Think that's long winded? That's just the start of it. The majority of this movie is entirely random. I'm sure the above sounds strange to you because, well, it is, but really almost everything about the movie is. It jumps around from one thing to the other with no warning, things happen for no apparent reason, and the whole thing is just very random. If randomness appeals to you, you'll love this movie! It's full of things happening for no reasoning whatsoever and of comedy banter. If you prefer things to have a plot that makes sense and things to be logical, this movie will drive you crazy. But then, if you like your movies to be logical, you probably wouldn't be watching a film about talking bees anyway.
I enjoyed the storyline and the flow of this movie. Yes, the storyline is very long winded, but you don't see movies like this if you're looking for realism. You see them because you want to be entertained, and the creativity and bizareness of this storyline certainly did that for me. There were quite a few moments during it where you have to frown and wonder if you missed something major because things have just happened entirely randomly, but that's what makes it amusing. And this really is a funny movie - there are a lot of jokes for all the ages. This is aimed at children so of course there is plenty of family friendly slapstick humour, but there are also a lot of more mature jokes that got laughs out of the audience (and confused complaints from the children).
Graphically, this film is a lot of fun to look at. The characters are cute, the world inside the honeycomb is beautiful, and the whole thing is very creative and bright with lots of little touches for you to look at and love. It's exciting to see the different decorations and ideas the designers have come up with - everything about the world they've made is amazing to look at. Regardless of what you think of the movie, you won't leave feeling disappointed with the animation.
There is a good variety of characters. People will associate with the main character, Barry, and as he is so likeable you enjoy watching his adventures. His friend is almost his complete opposite and is actually excited about the idea of working in one job forever. His and Barry's opinions differ all the way through and it's fun to watch their communication exchanges. The character of the human Vanessa is very basic and is probably the most dull character in the film, however scenes with her in are still amusing because of the idea of a relationship between her and her bee. And finally, the character of her boyfriend is absolutely hilarious.
Overall, I did enjoy this movie. It wasn't quite as good as I had been hoping, but it is still very watchable. Kids will definitley love everything about it, however don't be put off if you're an adult as there are plenty of jokes thrown in for you as well.
