Bedtime Stories...
People who know me will tell you I look nothing like Adam Sandler, but only after you ask them if I do, and even then probably only after you ask them whether I like his films. The answer you'll get to your first question (read it again... trust me, it makes sense) is a resounding yes, probably followed by a 'Duh!'
If I had a tattoo... oh yeah, the review.
Bedtime Stories tells the tale of Skeeter Bronson (Sandler) a handy-man working in a hotel which had once belonged to his father. The new owner promised that if Skeeter worked hard he would be allowed to manage it, however many years down the line he has still to gain the position, hard work non-withstanding. He stumbles upon a way to vent his frustration however when his sister (Courteney Cox) leaves her children in his care for a week. Having the "night-shift" with the kids he decides to spin them bedtime stories setting himself as the hero. The children add their own parts to his tale's and to Skeeter's amazement they start coming true. Suffice to say in true Fairytale fashion Skeeter gets the girl and lives happily ever after.
Now, that's all fine and dandy, a story simple enough for the kids to grasp, enough toilet humour to hold the attention of the males and a romantic pull to keep the ladies watching, 'so why,' the overly attentive of you ask 'are there three dots after the mini-title instead of the normal exclamation marks!?' The reason, my eagle-eyed friend, is that I still can't decide whether I liked it. When a person tells me they aren't a fan of Adam Sandler I tend to black-out, wake up in my bed with a splitting head-ache and need to spend hours getting blood off the ceiling, so believe me when I say this is serious.
I think the problem may stem from just how low Sandler starts out, his name is "Skeeter" a name reserved for people with aunties for mothers and he is ridiculed by the staff working on reception, a job reserved for people with an A in Geography, and maybe a B in French. My point is, Skeeter starts out so low that his "rise to power" becomes less of a zero to hero story and more of a "secret millionaire" one. The reason Sandler decided to do the film, was so that there would be one that his new child could watch and in this respect at least he manages amiably, Bedtime Stories still contains the humour we're used to from Sandler and the inclusion of "Bugsy" a bug-eyed Guinea pig keeps the laughs rolling. But I can't bring myself to write the nice words I have read in other reviews, to me it feels very much like the fans have been replaced by Sadie Sandler and whilst this should obviously be the case it still makes me feel like the Woody to Sadie's Buzz Lightyear.
In conclusion Bedtime Stories made me laugh, it kept making me want to fast forward just to see what other kind of imaginative fantasies the kids create for Skeeter to live-out, but it also made me cry, and not purposefully. If you're a fan of Sandler then watch it just to see if you agree with me, if not then watch it because it's a funny enchanting romp through two children's imaginations. Ignoring my hurt feelings I award 4/5 "Stars" and my congratulations on the girl!
