I had seen a trailer for “Bedtime Stories” a Disney film starring Adam Sandler and thought it looked fun so had added it to my rental list.
Adam Sandler plays the lead role of the character Skeeter Bronson who is handyman at a big hotel. The hotel was once owned by his dad and although Skeeter lives there the hotel is now run and owned by the slightly hypochondriac Barry Nottingham. Skeeter suddenly finds himself having to take some responsibility when his sister asks him to look after his young niece and nephew for a week whilst she is away.
Each night Skeeter tells them a bedtime story which they love and they each add their own thoughts about what should happen in the adventure story. Skeeter discovers that parts of the bedtime story come true the following day and this has amazing consequences for his life. Can he realise his dream of being manager of the hotel and getting the girl of his dreams to fall for him?
I quite enjoyed this film, it is by no means the best Disney film I have ever seen but it’s a good bit of harmless fun. The storyline is a bit weak, some of the laughs are a bit silly but it is enjoyable all the same. The film is really made to appeal to children and as such there aren’t as many jokes for adults although that’s not to say that they wont enjoy it too.
The acting is nothing to write home about and is quite stereotypical. Sandler plays much the same role as he does in most films, the boy that never grew up. Guy Pearce plays the stereotypical bad man role who is also out to get the job as hotel manager. I was also surprised to see Russell Brand make an appearance as one of the hotel workers, not the first person you would think of casting in a Disney film but he is quite funny in it. My favourite character though has to be Bugsy the hamster who has the most amazing (and yes I do know they weren’t real!) big eyes which convey so much character and emotion, more so than the human actors! He is just so funny and brings a lot of laughs to the film.
I thought this was a good film, but not great. I am glad I watched it and I did enjoy the experience but it is not a film I would be buying to add to my DVD collection. My advice is rent it, watch it and then return it!
