Bedtime Stories - Madonna
On this, her seventh album proper, Madonna once again shows that one of her greatest ... more
talents is her ability to choose collaborators who bring the best out of her. This time around, the producers and co-writers include Bjork, Nellee Hooper (Massive Attack/Soul II Soul) and swing deities Dallas Austin & Babyface (who, amongst a myriad of credits, were the men behind TLC's CrazySexyCool). Mellower in the most part than her previous work, the album includes the usual handful of hits in "Secret", "Human Nature", the title track, and "Take A Bow", a duet with Babyface which is as beautifully glum as anything she's done. While the period between the Erotica/Sex fiasco and her triumphant return with 1998's Ray Of Light was a comparatively lean period commercially for Madonna, this album is up there with the best of her work. --Ronita Dutta

When Skeeter Bronson's father sold their small motel to the entrepreneur, Barry Nottingham, Skeeter was promised job security in the future of the motel. But a lowly janitor of a now famous hotel was not quite what Skeeter had in mind. However, when Nottingham announces the renovation of the hotel into an even more famous and huge hotel, Skeeter's dreams flash before his eyes again, but only for a split second before they are torn away and Nottingham's son-in-law-to-be is given the position of manager.
Then when Skeeter's sister, Wendy, takes a trip and he is asked to look after her two young children, Patrick and Bobbi, his life only gets more depressing. He hasn't seen his nephew and niece in a while, doesn't know how to entertain children and, worst of all, he has a huge disliking for Jill, Wendy's colleague who has been asked to help out. The only thing Skeeter is any good at doing is telling bedtime stories with the help of a goggly eyed hamster and the children. But when their imaginative stories begin to come true, Skeeter sees an opportunity to get everything he's ever dreamed of.

I'm not a huge fan of Adam Sandler as I can't stand plain stupid films which tend to be his main genre of films but this looked like an enjoyable one so decided to give it a go anyway.
As expected, Sandler does once again play a silly character yet it doesn't end up being over the top or completely ridiculous and so makes for some very comical viewing. At the beginning of the film we see Skeeter's childhood and how he wanted to grow up to run his family's old motel and how he is now miserable in his current job as a lowly janitor. This immediately makes us feel sorry for him and plants us firmly on his side. There is also a love aspect between Skeeter and Jill who hate each other at first sight, but as they get to know more about one another, their feelings grow. This inclusion of 'real' emotions in the film is what takes away from it being a silly and slap-stick type film which makes it more real to life.
I did think it slightly strange that Russell Brand was cast into a children's film but his inclusion made it more watchable for those adults who like him and he added some dry humour into the mix. He didn't look any different or act any different from his usual self (minus the foul language of course) which makes him even funnier to watch when attempting to play a different character.
I was a bit disappointed that we didn't see much of Courteney Cox, as I'm one of those huge Friends enthusiasts, and was hoping to see some action from her since leaving the series but was only greeted with a couple of scenes with her in.
The film is brilliant for children of all ages as the two children in the film are very young and we get to see into their imagination through the stories they make up. This includes monsters made from snot, a sky raining down with gum balls, and many adventurous fighting scenes which are all magical to watch and provide lots of fun and entertainment for the youngsters in the classic Disney style.
Whilst the kids are creating childish adventures, the adults are attempting to steer the bedtime stories in a direction which will be beneficial to them by trying to add more grown up things into the stories such as sexy women, lots of money and revenge on those who deserve it. These parts are more comical and more appropriate for the adults in the audience which does make this a great film for the whole family. There is still a lingering of Sandler's stupid humour which pops up occasionally throughout the film, so his fans won't be disappointed. For me though, these parts did make it stupid and were the only bits I disliked about the film as it made it more unrealistic - yes I do like to think that maybe dreams could come true!
Overall, although it isn't the best of films, Bedtime Stories provides some fun and light-hearted family entertainment in a magical story.

...he tells the children a bedtime story... and it comes true. 'Bedtime Stories' possesses an incredible potential--the premise is magical, the possibilities are endless... what if stories could become reality? What would we do with such an incredible gift? What life would we create for ourselves--but more importantly, would we be able to remain true to ourselves? As Skeeter proves in this movie, given such an incredible gift, no matter how kind-natured ... ...are bound to surface. Adam Sandler manages to give Skeeter some depth of character, however, it is a depth that isn't all that deep. Sandler only skims the surface, never quite managing to make his character totally loveable. Skeeter is a flawed character that is superficial. Although meant to be easy-going, he's so stressed and frustrated most of the time that his behaviour is more often lukewarm than warm, and after he discovers the powers of storytelling, ...

Advantages: Cute kids, some amusing moments, guinea pig really grew on me Disadvantages: Just not funny enough for adults.
Bedtime Stories had been on our dvd list since seeing a trailer for it at the cinema. My husband had been particularly keen to see it while I was so-so. I enjoy Adam Sandler's films and often enjoy children's films. However, I suspected this might be a watered down version of both. THE PREMISE Bedtime Stories was directed by Adam Shankman a choreographer turned director, who I love. Some of you will be less familiar with Shankman but he is a regular ... ...his nephew and niece a bedtime story and realises that the pieces that they add to the story come true. The slightly opportunistic Skeeter tries to turn this to his advantage in order to gain control of the hotel, but learns from the children and Jill that there are more important things in life. SO SHOULD I SEE IT Bedtime Stories had the possibility to be a delightful, fanciful film about children's imaginations. It also had the potential to be ...

Skeeter discovers that parts of the bedtime story come true the following day and this has amazing consequences for his life. Can he realise his dream of being manager of the hotel and getting the girl of his dreams to fall for him?
I quite enjoyed this film, it is by no means the best Disney film I have ... ...The storyline is a bit weak, some of the laughs are a bit silly but it is enjoyable all the same. The film is really made to appeal to children and as such there aren’t as many jokes for adults although that’s not to say that they wont enjoy it too.
The acting is nothing to write home about and is quite stereotypical. Sandler plays much the same role as he does in most films, the boy that never grew up. Guy Pearce plays the stereotypical bad man ...

...BedtimeStories...
People who know me will tell you I look nothing like Adam Sandler, but only after you ask them if I do, and even then probably only after you ask them whether I like his films. The answer you'll get to your first question (read it again... trust me, it makes sense) is a resounding yes, probably followed by a 'Duh!'

BedtimeStories tells the tale of Skeeter Bronson (Sandler) a handy-man working in a hotel which had once belonged to his father. The new owner promised that if Skeeter worked hard he would be allowed to manage it, however many years down the line he has still to gain the position, hard work non-withstanding.
He stumbles upon a way to vent his frustration however when his sister (Courteney Cox) leaves her children in his care for a week. Having the "night...

DVD Description
Having promised to make a film his own kids could enjoy, Adam Sandler delivers the goods in the charming fairy tale BEDTIME STORIES. As the film opens we meet Marty Bronson (Jonathan Pryce), running the family motel along with his children, Wendy and Skeeter. Marty's ruinous business sense forces him to sell the motel to ambitious developer Barry Nottingham (Richard Griffiths). Marty hopes Skeeter will run the business someday, but years later we find Skeeter (Sandler) working only as the new hotel's maintenance man. So when Wendy (Courteney Cox) asks Skeeter to babysit her kids, Bobbi and Patrick, Skeeter--a master storyteller--wins them over by crafting bedtime stories that reflect his frustrations. From ancient Rome to outer space, Skeeter is the heroic underdog defeating his hotel rival, Kendall (Guy Pearce), and winning the hand of Nottingham's daughter. But when the kids' creative additions cross over into true life, Skeeter is convinced that they're the key to his sudden success. The price of that success, though, is the destruction of the kids' school. To save the school, his relationship with Wendy's kids, and the affections of love interest Jill (Keri Russell), Skeeter must bring his storytime heroics into the real world.
Sandler puts his trademark man-child antics to good use as the disheartened handyman who fulfills his dreams by staying true to the people who matter most. Filled with plenty of humour and a heartfelt message, BEDTIME STORIES is an uplifting family fable that can be appreciated by parents and children alike.
