Advantages: Characters, Plot, Special Effects, etc Disadvantages: None really
Bedknobs and broomsticks is for me, a classic Disney film, although its not one of the most popular with the public, it definitely is for me! I don't actually own the DVD, but I've seen it so many times on the TV, I know it really well by now and definitely well enough to do a review on it.
The plot is original, unlike many Disney films taking their plots from old fairytales (Cinderella, etc.) it is also unique because it is a mixture of animation and live action, such as when the flying bed is under the sea or when they meet some cartoon animals. This was very good for the time as it was released over thirty five years ago, in 1971.
You can tell the film is British as it starts off with some history, and you get a real feeling of the war and what was happening at the war. In a little village somewhere in Dorset, there is a witch ...
Advantages: Animation mixed with live action creates a wonderful illusory world Disadvantages: Quite a wait before the animation begins
The story is set in Britain during World War II. Three children are evacuated from London to stay with Eglantine Price, a woman who has no desire to care for children. Why? Because she is a practicing witch and caring for these children may expose her. Under duress she takes the children in and then the adventures begin!!
The children discover that she is a witch and, for them to keep quite, she must give them something magical. Eglantine Price gives them a magical bedknob. By tapping the bedknob three times and turning it, all those sat on the bed are whisked away to wherever they wish to go. Their first visit is to London to find Professor Amelius Brown, who is the head of 'witch school'. Eglantine needs the last few lessons in order to become a proper witch. However, they discover that Professor Brown can not help them ...
just drawn! Along with Mary Poppins, I purchased another childhood favourite, in the form of Bedknobs and Broomsticks!
I would spend hours in front of the TV when I was younger, happily playing away with a good Disney on in the background. Indeed, one of these was Bedknobs and Broomsticks. I think we had taped it from the TV one time as I don't actually remember seeing the front cover to this edition. So I took quite a while examining the wonders of the DVD case. The main background to it was a sky blue shade with the fresh green grass colour just visible at the bottom. Mounted on the scene there is a large image of some cartoon animals: the King lion (not to be mistaken with the Lion King!), a cheetah and a bizarre monkey thing. Behind these football-playing animals you can see a flying bed, with five people astride it, dressed in 1940s ...
