My dad is a very big fan of music, his cd collection is forever growing and he very often hosts music quizzes both in pubs and for family and friends. One of his favourite rounds is a beat the intro round where he will play a short excert from the introduction to a song and request the name of both the song and the artist!
As it is always my dad playing the intros and not joining in (being his cds we feel it would give him an unfair advantage!) when I saw this DVD online last Christmas I thought it would be an ideal chance to allow him to join in the fun.....and find out just how good he actually is!
So what's the deal....
The DVD boasts: 400 music intro's, Lyrics to 200 songs, 100 album covers Over 10,000 questions based on the above to test your music knowledge. The categories span from the 50s through to the 90s with some very recent artists included. Rounds can be selected on individual decades or as a random selection from all decades. It's currently retailing for about £8.99 on play.com with free delivery.
Here's what
you do...
There are three different types of questions. You will either see an album cover (minus the title and name of the artist.....well come on would kinda give it away otherwise!), hear an introduction to a song, or read some lyrics from a song. After this is on screen for about 30 seconds five questions will appear related (if somewhat loosely at times!) to the image/sound you have seen. You then have a certain amount of time to answer these questions before the next round. You can select at the beginning the number of rounds and after all rounds are completed the answers are displayed. Once this is finished the person/team with the highest number of points is the winner!
Sounds simple right....
Well the concept is simple....the questions it seems not so much!
We played this at a christmas party with an age range from about 16 through to 45ish. Stupidly all the younger ones decided to stick together and all the golden oldies (so glad my dad's not reading this!) stuck together on a team. This was not a clever idea because the younger ones had no idea of the older songs and the older ones (for the most part) had no idea about the more recent songs, this resulted in one team being bored for half the time then all change at half time!....
...TIP 1 : Split teams fairly with a varied age range in each.
There is an option at the beginning to select the decade but with a varied age group it's probably easier to choose the random category as it should encompass something everyone will know.
We also found there did not seem to be enough time to answer all five questions if you just let the DVD play, especially when playing in teams as there is a lot of conferring and debating (ok arguing really!) and by the time you've decided on the first one or two time is up. There is a simple way to combat this...
...TIP 2 : Use the DVD remote control to press pause while the questions are showing until everyone has had a chance to answer.
While the above tip may seem like cheating to some people I would like to remind you all at this point.....it's supposed to be fun!!!
As I mentioned previously you can select the number of rounds per game. We optimistically chose about 30 rounds and this did take a loonnnnnnnnnggggggg time!! I would suggest going for the shortest length, especially on your first time playing, you can always have more than one game if you enjoy it.
The five related questions are sometimes very loosely related. There may be a question about an event that happened in the year of the songs release for example. Some of the questions further down also can give hints to some of the first questions as well...
....TIP 3 : Even if you have no idea at the first two questions don't give up as the end questions on events etc are ways to make up the points!
So what did we think.....
Overall it did exactly what it said on the tin, asked music related questions that included some intro rounds. Personally I think it's a game best played in teams (mixing alcohol with the game also ensures some laughs....but warning may lead to people getting bored with it quicker!) Individuals may struggle on the questions due to the sheer diversity of decades and music types.
Whilst we did enjoy playing this at the time as far as I remember we gave up after the first couple of games, when everyone had resorted to cheating or righting stupid answers!! It has since been relegated to the DVD cabinet and to be honest I doubt if it will re-surface this christmas...but you never know!! I did enjoy playing it although it did have a very short shelflife in our house....
If you are very knowledgeable about music and enjoy music quizzes then I think this would be enjoyable for you, also a good party game to keep the family occupied for a while, however would definitly be wasted on anyone younger than about 16.
Thanks for Reading
Maria
