I first saw the saw this movie just after it came out back in 1997, and don't remember being all that impressed with it. I watched it a few weeks ago however, and thought it was much better than I remembered.
~The story~
Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson) is working for the Royal National Gallery of London, where he is their worst employee, detested by the rest of the staff for his general hopelessness and tendency to fall asleep on the job. They are desperate to get rid of him, but the head of the gallery wants him to stay. When an opportunity arises for an art scholar to go to Los Angeles for the unveiling of a portrait, 'Whistler's mother', which is to be returned to the U.S where it was painted, the gallery staff unanimously vote for Mr Bean to go, just so they can be rid of him for a while.
Mr Bean arrives in America to be greeted by David Langley (Peter MacNicol) who works at the LA art gallery, and who has talked his wife into letting Mr Bean stay at their home for the duration of his trip to the US.
Mr Bean being Mr Bean soon leaves a trail of devastation in his wake, destroying everything he comes into contact with - including David's family. How long before they figure out he is not 'Doctor Bean'? And how likely is the unveiling of Whistler's Mother to go smoothly now Mr Bean is around? You'll just have to watch to find out!
~What I thought~
As I said, I was more impressed with this film seeing it the second time around. Rowan Atkinson is brilliant as the hapless, and mostly silent Mr Bean and a lot of the time his facial expressions are more than good enough to tell the story on it's own. Peter MacNicol plays the character of the exasperated David well, the man whose life is being destroyed bit by bit by the well-meaning but clumsy and hapless stranger who he has invited to his home.
The plot, although quite simple, is still good, and makes you want to see what happens next. The humour is all pretty clean and suitable for both adults and children, and I found myself laughing through most of this, although I seem to vaguely remember some of the gags were also used in the TV series.
The only extra on this DVD is the trailer for the movie, but there is also scene selection and an option for subtitles.
~Price~
This DVD can be bought for £4.98 from Amazon.
~Conclusion~
I'm not sure why I didn't like this film the first time around - maybe my sense of humour has become more childish with age!! This is a great little comedy, suitable for the whole family, and if you like slapstick humour, or are just a fan of Mr Bean, I would recommend this film.
