...the result was the series Battlestar Galactica.
The time is unknown, but the premise is there was once a world named Kobol and mankind lived there with gods who have very familiar Greek names. Something happened that led to the gods sending the humans forth, and they left Kobol to found 13 colonies on 13 different worlds. During the dispersal, the 13th colony melted into legend as they established their world, and then for unknown ... ...will not find them. This Battlestar is of course, the Battlestar Galactica, and it is captained by one Adama.
Conceived as family fare, the scenes are not bloody, there is no sex, and swearing is PG in nature. Forget for a moment the new series. It is great, but just put that out of your mind. The new series is based upon the same general premise as the original series, but there the resemblance ends.
This series was imagined in the mid 1970's by producer Glen Larson, but he had no takers until a little movie named Star Wars smashed past all box office expectations. Suddenly he had interest, and the result was the series Battlestar Galactica.
The time is unknown, but the premise is there was once a world named Kobol and mankind lived there with gods who have very familiar Greek names. Something happened that led to the gods sending the humans forth, and they left Kobol to found 13 colonies on 13 different worlds. During the dispersal, the 13th colony melted into legend as they established their world, and then for unknown reasons, lost or cut contact with the others. All that remains is legend.
In the meantime, the other 12 colonies thrive, and advance even further scientifically in some ways. We see a society that roamed between the worlds, but seemingly not much more exploration, and that built robots to do every job they could think of, including bear arms. To do these things successfully, they were equipped with quite a bit of AI and gained self awareness. It transpired they did not appreciate being considered lesser beings and merely machines, often called toasters in a derogatory manner, and they turned on their human masters.
It is here the series first introduces us to Caprica and the other colonies and its fleet of Battlestars. They are at war with the machines, and are brokering a peace with the Cylons (what the machines are called, presumably to impart the fact they are cyborg in nature), but the Cylons are not satisfied and are untrusting, and use this as an opportunity to launch a major offensive. They rain down destruction upon the 12 coloniesand the humans on the various colonies flee in whatever vessels they can to escape the destruction. All but one of the fleet of Battlestars is destroyed trying to defend the civilian ships fleeing the scene of destruction, and it leads "this ragtag fleet" in an effort to find Earth, where hopefully the Cylons will not find them. This Battlestar is of course, the Battlestar Galactica, and it is captained by one Adama.
Conceived as family fare, the scenes are not bloody, there is no sex, and swearing is PG in nature. Each episode stands alone fairly well, and there is usually a moral present somewhere in the story, a trait not uncommon in 1970's television. The Cylons may be frightening to younger children, however, as they are large, bulky, shiny robots with big guns, who speak in computerised voices and want nothing more than to kill every living human being, children included, with the notable exception of their leader, the human traitor Baltar. Fans who come to the original via the reimagining will enjoy seeing Richard Hatch in his original series role as pilot Apollo and Dirk Benedict as the very male Starbuck.
If you like classic sci fi or have a younger sci fan in the house, this series is well worth getting. The box set is excellent value at only £27.99, as it not only contains all 24 (there are 2 two parters) of the original 45 minute episodes, uncut and in correct order, but over 3 1/2 hours of bonus features. These bonus features include an interview with the show's original creator, behind the scenes footage, deleted scenes, a making of documentary, a photo gallery, and more.
Quality wise, they did an absolutely fabulous job. The presentation of this set is one other makers should take note of. Spreading the material over seven discs to maintain clarity after first digitally remastering and restoring the original film, if it was not for the slight dating of some of the sets and costumes, this would look fairly up to date. The pictures are clear, the sound is excellent (though digitised stereo from a mono source...it was 1978!), and I give bonus points for the discs being single sided. Another treat for Bellisario fans is that by watching this, you will see some of his earlier directing experience.
Go on, buy this box set. Fill those nights when your Dr Who stuff is not on :)
Advantages: Nostalgia glory, vipers, cylons space battles! Disadvantages: Not much
An avid fan of Battlestar Galactica, I watched the movie version way back in the 70's - remembering how my mum thought it was too loud, but as a kid I loved it!
Never really caught the TV series when it was first broadcast, as this was intermittent and patchy at best. Managed however to catch some/all the episodes in the mid 80's. Even so the shows even then were very watchable.
Yes the show has undergone a recent "re-imagination" - and in my opinion ... ...right for the time - the remake is right for the 21st century. As sci-fi goes, this was attempting to be a little darker and more edgy for its day (a brave move), to its more contemporary stable mate of Star Wars. The story is familiar to all who know sci-fi, mankind has been wiped out and the last of humanity is on the run, searching for the planet earth. The special effects for television for the day was miles ahead of anything (and from the documentaries ...

Advantages: Original (at the time) story, great cast, very entertaining Disadvantages: Repeated effects, some bad continuity, only 1 series of it ever made!
...a new home.
The Battlestar Galactica is the last remaining warship of man and must guide their civilian fleet safety to a new home, lead by Commander Adama (the wonderful Lorne Greene) they must cross the vast ocean of the unknown Galaxy, what perils will they face, can what they find be any worse than Cylons?
This was a TV show released at the height of the Star Wars fever, just over a year after the first film's release, a huge audience wanted ... ...broadcast. This resulted in Battlestar Galactica being the most expensive series per episode for it's time on air. (Expense was why it was cancelled ironically.) It still entertains, it has a lot of funny moments too and some great acting by Lorne Green and the sinister John Colicos who plays the great villain Baltar.
The DVD itself has rather simple menus, no fancy animations like we've seen in season 3 of the new Battlestar Galactica. The features ...

...get attacked and only one battlestar (a warship) called Galactica is left in the whole fleet. The Cylons also attack all the human worlds meaning.
The survivors are then left struggling and form a fleet of ships and flee into exile in search of the planet Earth, where the 13th tribe settled.
The first 10 episodes keep to the plot, with state of the art special effects for TV at the time. The series ran out of money so special effects or costumes ... ...becomes more and more absurd towards the end of the series in an effort to keep going without backing.
There are no special features at all on this other than still photos. It is a basic DVD transfer, which for me is all I want.

Advantages: Superb acting. Awesome special effects Disadvantages: The menu is a pain
The second series of the new version of BattlestarGalactica.
We bought this boxedset as a present for my sons 18th birthday.
I laughed derisively when my husband ordered this from Amazon.
In my imagination I saw the 70's attempt at a cheap sci fi tv program and wondered why they had bothered remaking it for the new millenium!
Whenever my husband and son watched the new series 1 on TV ,I had gone upstairs to read.
However ,it was a birthday and so we all sat to watch the first episode on the new DVD.
First off was the usual Warning not to copy this DVD which you cannot fast forward through .Nothing unusual about that.
Then came the menu

Advantages: One of THE best shows on television Disadvantages: This series is to be short-lived so get into it while you can!
It may be a shame that after next year, the newly re-imagined phenomenon that is BattlestarGalactica will no longer be in production. Alas, series four will be the final season and how it ends the saga is anyone's guess.
But after a stunning first year that broke preconceptions and cynics alike, this second season leaves nothing to the imagination as viewers can't seem to get enough BSG!
After the insane ending to the first year - a cliff-hanger that stunned so many people, series two picks up right from that moment and never stops racing around at a rapid pace. This is a must-have for any Television Science Fiction fan. If you live in the UK, you are far more lucky to have the season come in one boxset. North Americans have to deal with two separate box halves consisting of ten episodes each, which can add up to lots more money ...
Advantages: Scaringly realistic at times and features real issues of war and questions our very reality.... Disadvantages: None -blurs all lines between human and Cylon
the survivors of the Cylon attack on Caprica would settle on a new planet they'd discovered- supposedly hidden from the all evil machines by atmospheric cloud cover. Unfortunately events Baltar had unintentionally set in place going way back to season 1, resulted in the Cylons finding the fleet almost a year later. At which point Baltar surrendered on behalf of the human race. New Caprica was now under dictatorship rule by the Cylons; with Galactica and her sister ship Pegasus forced to flee because most of their crew had settled on the planetary surface...
This is a very different BattlestarGalactica to any of the seasons we have seen before with much of the action taking place on New Caprica, as the colonists have named their new home. Lee Adama is woefully out of shape on board the Pegasus after considering the Cylons to be no longer a menace ...
