Advantages: A good film to watch Disadvantages: Dont expect too much
...Maybe its because everyone has hyped it out of existence but I was not as impressed with Gladiator as I expected to be.
I had heard how excellent it was and, after visiting a real live ampitheatre in Tunisia this year, I had to see what they were like in action.
It was for this reason that I settled down on Boxing day with the video that had been bought for my brother in law. He had been telling me how great it was.
The opening sequence involved some extremely graphic violence and death scenes with a battle between the Romans and Germanians.
I found it a bit over the top. I know these were bloddy affairs but I thought it was a bit too long winded.
Then the hero,Maximus, gets stitched up by the new emperor and his family are murdered.
From that point on I knew what was going to happen and it became very predictable.

...I first saw this “blasphemous” Comedy around 1982 in a marquee with about 100 or so other 10 to 18 year olds, the strange thing was that we all belonged to the Methodist Youth Club when we were on a weekend away, only thinking about it now, was it the best film to show budding Methodists??? Since then, I’ve probably watched this movie around 15-16 times, and at each viewing I notice another funny bit that I failed to see the previous time.
It was actually filmed on location in Tunisia in 1978 and released in 1979, and to those who hadn’t seen it considered it to be quite “controversial”, I actually see it as a micky-take of people who follow religion just because they think that’s what they should do. My favourite tag lines are “The film that is so funny it was banned in Norway”...
